Export/Import failing

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to export my blog and import it to a self-hosted WordPress installation. However since there are so many images – and many of the originals are very large – the import is failing due to a timeout. If I had FTP access to my files, I would simply download all of the media from my wordpress.org blog and then upload them to my new WordPress site (hosted at Dreamhost). I realize that I can purchase a “guided transfer” for $149, but was wondering/hoping there was a more cost effective way to handle this. Since I know precisely what I need to do and where this is failing, I don’t really need all of the services that come with the guided transfer.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Have you seen this guide? It will step you through the process of moving your site to a WordPress.org instance:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org

Are you having issues with the export or just the import? Just a note, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate entities. As we only support sites hosted here at WordPress.com, all issues with the new site – including the importing of the file – must be taken to the WordPress.org support community:

    http://wordpress.org/support/

If you post the issue there, the WordPress.org community might be able to help you solve this. Since I have no access to your files on WordPress.org, I wouldn’t be able to help you troubleshoot this unfortunately.

I’m so sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

The site is hosted at wordpress.com:

The export is fine, since it is just an XML file. It’s the import to my WordPress installation (at Dreamhost) that is failing. It tries, but for too long. Eventually it just fails. I assume it is trying to grab all of the images that are referenced in the XML file and physically download/upload them to my new server. And since there are so many, and many of the originals are very large, it is simply timing out. If I had a way to either break up the import into chunks, or FTP to my files at wordpress.com to grab them, I’d be fine. But I don’t know of a way to do either.

    HI there,

As I mentioned before, I worked with WordPress.com support. So, please take WordPress.org import issues to the WordPress.org community:

    http://wordpress.org/support/

I have no access to your WordPress.org site so I wouldn’t be able to help you import it. I can only help if you were importing to WordPress.com. If you need help I suggest looking into Guided Transfer.

I’m confused. I am exporting FROM a wordpress.COM site – which is where I’ll be paying the $$$ to for the “guided transfer”. Doesn’t this help fall under the .com, rather than the .org?

I don’t really have a problem importing to my own hosted blog (granted, it is technically a .org thing at that point, since I have set up my own WordPress blog elsewhere). But my problem isn’t because I’m using my own WordPress install. My problem is that I can’t get at all of my images because .com doesn’t allow me to FTP from my site; nor can I break-up my export into smaller chunks that would no doubt allow me to import all of my photos without experiencing a timeout.

Try breaking it up into a few files by exporting a range of posts/pages at a time, and then importing each of these files in turn.

When you click on posts or pages, you’ll get these options, as displayed here:
