Exporting Blog

Hi. If I look at the instructions to export my blog to XML, it is clear to follow. However, when I extract the ZIP file all that is there are HTML files, so not an XML file. Can anyone assist please?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hello @botty1963! I’ll be happy to assist you with this.

The ZIP file you downloaded from the export tool isn’t meant to be extracted. Instead, it’s designed to be imported directly into another WordPress.com site using the Import tool. The file inside is in XML format and contains your site’s content, like posts and pages. Depending on how your computer is set up, it might show a different icon or open in a browser when double-clicked, which can be confusing.

Are you trying to move your content to another WordPress.com site? If so, you can upload the file as-is during the import process. Here’s a guide you can follow:

    https://wordpress.com/support/import/

However, if you’re trying to achieve something else with the file, just let me know and I’ll be happy to help your further.

Also, I want to mention that since you’re on a paid plan and want more direct and private support, you can email us directly at help@wordpress.com, and we’d be happy to keep helping you from there.

Hi, many thanks for the response. I am trying to export it so that I can import it into blogger. I know there is a plug-in, but it has to be paid for. I am looking to move as it has become a little too costly for what I use it for.

    Thanks for sharing this, @botty1963!

In this case, since it’s not possible to implement plugins under your current plan, the only option would be to export your site content as an XML file and then try importing it there:

    https://wordpress.com/support/export/

I also understand you’re moving your site since you’re interested in saving costs. However, I noticed your plan is still covered for a couple of months, so you still have time to keep using it.

If you have any additional questions or want more help with your plan, feel free to contact us via email or directly from your site following this guide:

Please let us know if you have any questions or need any extra help, and we’ll be happy to assist you.
