Exporting blog

  I’m trying to download my site so I can have a backup on my computer and also a backup location, but I noticed that the files are now in ZIP format and no longer in XML format like they used to be. I need the file in XML. Is there a reason for this, and is there a way to convert the ZIP to XML?

  your XML file(s) are inside the zip file, a zip file is a compressed file, depending on your computer and operating system, most have the ability to extract the base files from the zip files – try right clicking on the file and see if you have an “extract all” option – else you will need to find a Zip file extract utility program

  Hi Bob,

  Zip files are sent for larger sites. The export (.xml) files are broken up into smaller chunks and then added to a .zip file as this makes it easier to import later. When uploading smaller files if there is a problem with the export it’s easier to know with which part of the import. It also requires less badwidth to upload multiple smaller files than one larger one.

  I have reviewed the documentation, what part was confusing to you?

  The documentation doesn’t say anything about a zip file, just XML, so it’s not clear that the XML files are inside the zip (which I know now is the case). Also, the Export page in the dashboard doesn’t say anything about a zip file either, just XML/WXR.

  I’ve downloaded my blog before and it has always just downloaded as an XML file. I didn’t have to convert or extract any XML files from the zip file. I’m using a “WordPress to Blogger” converter (https://wordpress2blogger.appspot.com/) because I’ve set up a mirror site (which I don’t use, I just do a backup every year), but now it won’t convert the file because it’s in a zip and not an XML.

  Thanks Bob,

  I updated the “Large Exports” section of the support document to state that when the import is large a zip file will be used containing multiple files. You should be able to run your converter on each XML file found inside the zip file.
