Exporting Blog to move to Worpress.org

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, my domain with wordpress.com is silkandwool.wordpress.com. For the past year, I have mapped my own domain name silkandwool.eu to this blog. So whenever I shared a link to a blog post, it looks like, for example: http://silkandwool.eu/2014/06/04/wip-wednesday-still-the-stripes/.

I would like to self-host my blog, using wordpress.org, and the domain name silkandwool.eu (thus cancelling the mapping – or, rather, not prolonging it for the next year).

So I suppose, if I do not prolong the mapping, the url of the individual posts will keep their structure, only changing silkandwool.eu to silkandwool.wordpress.com, so for the example above the url will be http://silkandwool.wordpress.com/2014/06/04/wip-wednesday-still-the-stripes/. Is that correct?

If I then export my blog to a self-hosted wordpress.org site with domaine silkandwool.eu, would then urls of posts on new site revert back to the http://silkandwool.eu/2014/06/04/wip-wednesday-still-the-stripes/? Therefore, would this ensure that all links out there to my individual post work correctly after moving my blog as described?
Also, people who are members of wordpress.com who are following me now, would they still see my posts in their reader?

    Thank you very much.

    Hi there,

    Please see my answers below:

I would like to self-host my blog, using wordpress.org, and the domain name silkandwool.eu (thus cancelling the mapping – or, rather, not prolonging it for the next year).

I went ahead and disabled auto renew for this domain upgrade. When you’ve setup your self-hosted site, I can remove the upgrade as well to make sure you won’t be charged moving forward.

Correct – the URL will revert back to the silkandwool.wordpress.com domain when the Domain Mapping upgrade is removed.

You’ll just need to change the permalinks on your self-hosted site by navigating to Dashboard -> Settings -> Permalinks. You’re going to want to set the permalink structure to “Day and Name” http://silkandwool.eu/2014/06/05/sample-post/

That will ensure that the permalinks match the default links from WordPress.com. Does that make sense?

Also, people who are members of wordpress.com who are following me now, would they still see my posts in their reader?

You’ll want to transfer your subscribers as described here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/moving-your-subscribers/#wordpress-com-to-self-hosted-site

If you have email followers, they will still receive emails of new posts once you have moved them over. Your WordPress.com followers will be moved over, but they will not receive email notifications of new posts. New posts from your self-hosted site will however pop up in their Reader.

Let me know if you have any additional questions!
