Exporting featured image linkage doesn't work

  Tools->Export does not export Featured Images as _thumbnail_id meta data as wordpress.org importer expects. In fact I can’t see that it exports any Featured Image information at all. This is a pretty standard feature that seems like it ought to migrate transparently. Am I missing something obvious?

  The theme cannot be exported so any featured images provided by the theme are not going to be featured images when you export. When you import you ought to be prompted and asked if you want to include attachments. The media files including image files are attachments.

  Yes the attachment data gets exported fine and import then pulls the files over from wordpress.com

  AFAIK featured images for posts have not been theme-dependent for a long time. The standard wordpress.org exporter does include a metadata entry with posts that sets _thumbnail_id which the standard wordpress.org importer sees and sets the up featured images appropriately.

  So far I’ve had about 90% with a hack to the importer which forces the first attached image encountered to also be the featured image. Brittle and not terribly satisfying but got me down the road a bit.

  Hi @mediastudiesfaculty,

  You’re correct that featured images should automatically be set when you export/import from a WordPress.com blog. This issue should be fixed now. Can you try re-exporting and re-importing? This should not duplicate files, but it should attach featured images to your posts.
