Exporting media to a new host after migrating the domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I am moving to a stand alone wordpress site and migrating the domain name. The documentation says that after I export the site from wordpress.com hosting and import into my new host there is an option to move over the media files. If I migrate the domain that wordpress.com is currently using to host my page, how will the new standalone wordpress find the images when the domain its looking for has moved to the new host? How do I get my media files to migrate properly.

    Thank you for the knowledge

  • Hi there,

    Is this for https://westoverfarmersmarket.org/?

If you created the export file before you switched that domain to a self-hosted site, you’ll need to create a new export file with the free address.

Go to My Site ->Domains and set the free address, westoverfarmersmarketdotorg.wordpress.com, as the primary domain on the site. You’ll need to be logged in as the wfmadmin account that owns the domain to do this.

After doing this, create a new export file, and import that file to the self-hosted site. As long as the WordPress.com is online and publicly visible the media files should then be transferred once the import on the self-hosted site completes.

I don’t know of another way to pull the images across to a self-hosted site without using an import file, but perhaps the users in the WordPress.org forums know of a method. The only thing I’m certain of is that the WordPress.com site needs to be public, or no other site can access the media library to pull the images in.

You can find the self-hosted forums here:
