Exporting my University WordPress account to a new WordPress

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi, currently I access my WordPress account through my University – this is so I don’t have to personally pay for the account. Now that I am leaving University I need to export it from the University and import it onto a new WordPress account.

When I login to my WordPress through my Universities site it takes me to a page called ‘Installatron’ – using this I’m able to create ‘separate’ domains that have different themes, plugins and content but it is still under the same domain name. It is essentially another page on my website, however I am able to treat it like a whole new website.

Now I am using the official WordPress I’m realising this ‘Installatron’ is something my University use, and isn’t the landing page on WordPress.

On my University account I have a handful of these kind of websites, am I able to get this Installatron so I can have this feature under one account or would I have to pay for a subscription on multiple accounts to host all my current websites myself?

Additionally, to have use to plugins and themes which would be the best subscription for me to get?

    Thanks, BISECT!

    Hi there!

In your University WordPress install, you (hopefully) should have an option to Export your site under Tools -> Export. You can select to export all your content and you’ll download an XML file to your computer.

Then, on your WordPress site, you would use Tools -> Import -> Import from WordPress to import that XML file you downloaded.

On my University account I have a handful of these kind of websites, am I able to get this Installatron so I can have this feature under one account or would I have to pay for a subscription on multiple accounts to host all my current websites myself?

Doing a quick Google search, it appears that this “Installatron” is just a one-click install interface. You shouldn’t need this to have your own sites here at WordPress.com as we handle the installation of the WordPress software for you and manage the security and other tasks for you.

Additionally, to have use to plugins and themes which would be the best subscription for me to get?

You don’t need a paid plan if you just want to have your content imported to a free WordPress.com site. To use third party plugins and themes, you would need a Business or eCommerce plan, but if you can clarify what you would need on your site, it’s quite possible that the Personal or Premium plan would be sufficient for your site’s needs. WordPress.com has a lot of functionality and features built into our hosting, so we may have what you need without needing to use your own plugins or themes. You can compare the different plan options here:

I forgot to add that we also have hundreds of free and paid themes here already at WordPress.com that you don’t need an upgrade to access and use on your new website. You can see all the different theme options here:

    https://wordpress.com/themes

Most people can find exactly what they’re looking for in our existing selection of themes, therefore not needing to upgrade to Business. :)

    I hope that helps!
