Exporting to self-hosted WordPress from .com WordPress

Once I export my blog to my new domain (set up with wordpress.org), what happens to the old blog? I would want to inform my followers. Does the .com account and blog remain? Is the content deleted or just copied when I do the exporting?

Nothing happens to the old blog. If you want, you can delete it or take it private or just leave it, though I don’t recommend that, as search engines hate finding duplicate content and will downgrade you.
You might want to set a static page at the front with a link to your new blog.

It remains unless you delete it. My suggestion is once you have everything transferred over, that you go through and mark all posts as private on the .COM blog, and then put up one last post announcing your move and giving a link to your new blog. Then watch the stats on the old blog, and when the number of visitors goes down to a trickle, set the blog to “private” at settings > privacy just in case you would at sometime in the future want to reuse it or return to it. Once it is marked as “private” it will not interfer with your new blog, and within 6 months or so your new blog page rank should be back up to what your old blog was.

The reason I suggest keeping it and making it private is that if you delete it, you will never be able to get that blog URL back again. WordPress.COM does not recycle blog URL’s, or give them back once they are deleted.

I opened this up again with a follow up question…
I assume that in exporting content from old to new blog the pictures don’t “automatically” get exported. Is this true? Do I need to manually upload all the images from old blog to new? -
