Exporting WP.com to new server

Hi – I have read about exporting and importing the xml file and I have got that far except the import plug in is not compatible with WP 3.9.1. I need to change some permissions anyhow to install the older plug in, but is there any way atall to get over 450 jpegs, theme and content out of there without database access? I understand there is no ftp access either.

There shouldn’t be any compatibility issues when importing a WP.com xml export to a WP.org website. The only thing that could be a problem is that your xml file is too big to upload. That’s a restriction of your web host, not of the software. This can be solved by exporting your posts only for a few months or a category at a time, resulting in a smaller file. After importing each file it will give you the opportunity to transfer the media files associated with those posts. See: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org
You also have the option of buying the Guided Transfer where a staff member will handle all this for you. Details in the support doc linked above.

The plug in is not tested with WP 3.9.1 and as I say, the permissions serverside are not allowing an install, so when I have that sorted, I may have more luck.
Yes, I am looking at a Guided Transfer, but the server I want to use is not of the three permitted hosts, so that may not be an option. -
I don’t understand what you mean with a plug-in. The import/export feature is built into the WP.org software as far as I can tell (i.e. not a plugin) and works essentially the same in both platforms. If you’re trying to import via a different plug-in that might be the problem.

When I log in to the fresh install and go import/wordpress, I am told I must install the WP importer and that the plugin has not been tested with this version 3.9.1. I hit install now and get “destination directory for file streaming does not exist or is not writable”. Trying to do it manually gives other problems. Maybe I should downgrade the WP install :-/
