exporting/importing blog from a wordpress.com to another wordpress.com

  • Unknown's avatar

I created a phantom wordpress blog to re-build travellingcrone.com. When I imported travellingcrone.com to travellingcronetest.com everything worked fine. Finished travellingcronetest.com exported the file, went to travellingcrone.com and imported that file… twice. Nada, nil, nilch, nothing. Any ideas?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I am obviously doing something wrong since I got an email confirming the import was successful but the old blog is still showing.

    Hi there!

It sounds like there’s some confusion over how the import process works. When you import a file into your site, it doesn’t overwrite the content that is already there. It will add the content that you’re importing to the content that already exists. Additionally, the import will not include any theme settings or custom menus.

There are a couple of ways you can move forward at this point. I’ll lay them out below:

    1. You can change the design or your original site at travellingcrone.wordpress.com to look like your new one. We won’t have to transfer anything or reset anything. Your site will just be in transition until you finish all the settings changes you want to make.

    2. You could transfer your domain to your other site (travellingcronetest). Once the domain is transferred, anyone visiting will land on the new site instead of the old one. We can transfer any followers you have. The downside here is that you may lose some “likes” from various social media sources as well as your WordPress.com likes.

Let me know what you’d like to do.

GAK! I did a wack of work on the test site and would loathe to do that all over again. If I transfer my domain to the test site would the name follow? What happens to the original site?
    Thank you for your help.

I’m not sure what this means. If you transfer the domain, anyone visiting travellingcrone.com will see your new site.

What happens to the original site?

The old site will still exist at travellingcrone.wordpress.com

Honestly, I think the first option is the better route to go. I know that you’ll have to redo the work on your design, however your site’s naming scheme could be confusing in the future and you’ll lose some or all of your previous ‘likes’.

So if I understand this correctly, when I imported the files they were added to the existing ones? But I don’t see them anywhere.
Thank you for your help, I will follow your advice and re-work the main site.

“our site’s naming scheme could be confusing in the future”
    What does that mean?

This depends on the types of files you imported. Did you import your Posts? Or Pages? Menus?

    What does that mean?

Sorry for being unclear! I meant that when you navigate through your list of sites, you’ll see travellingcrone and travellingcronetest. If you move the domain instead of redesigning your site, then travellingcronetest would become your ‘active’ site and it could cause confusion in the future.

Let me know if I can help you set up your new design!

Thank you for being so patient with me.
So now I had another idea. What if I deleted all the posts from tc.com, then changed the theme and then imported all the files from tctest.com. ???? Would that work?

    Hi there,

Did you make changes to the posts themselves on your test site? Or only the theme?

You can change the theme on your site at travellingcrone.com without deleting/importing the posts, and that will change the blog’s appearance. You’d only need to delete and import the posts from your test site if you made changes to the content of the posts themselves.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

So I jumped off the cliff and changed themes on my travellingcrone.com site and all went quite well… except when I checked on my ‘about’ page it wasn’t there. GAK Is there anyway of getting it back? I loved that page and didn’t save it anywhere else. I mean I thought I did but it isn’t on travellingcronetest either. help… again?

never mind, I’m an idiot. I renamed the about page to ‘who is this chick’ and I guess the new theme just popped “about” in there just cause.

    Hi there,

I’m glad you found that about page! It’s odd that the new theme put in “about” for no reason, and I’ll look into that — thanks for letting me know. :)
