Expound Theme Doesn't Render Correctly
-
I cannot get the horizontal presentation on my blog that the example of the theme shows. I can’t figure out why. The stories all stack like a blog. Would anyone have any ideas?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

One more thing: My lead story does not change no matter how many other stories I post. If they are all designated as sticky or not they do not change.

Maybe you already resolved this since this your question is so old?
I have Expound also. Those highlighted posts on the homepage are not “sticky”, actually. Instead, you have to give a post the tag “featured” for it to show up as one of those featured/highlighted posts. If you don’t tag any of your posts “featured” I’m not sure what happens, maybe your most recent posts automatically get featured.
Anyway, from what I remember, the featured posts will line up stacked vertically (the way you don’t like) until you have a certain number of posts tagged “featured”, but unfortunately I can’t remember what that number is–maybe five? After you have 5 or however many (?) of them tagged featured, then I believe they will line up horizontally the way you see them on the theme examples. All except for the most recent featured post, which will be larger, and at the top by itself.
Sorry not to know the details better! For my own blog, I actually don’t want that horizontal line-up, so I always keep only 4 or fewer posts tagged featured. I remove the “featured” tag from one of my previous featured posts when I make a new post.

Looks like mtowle3308 probably solved their issue, but for let me try to clarify how Expound works:
Expound always displays up to five featured posts, as long as there are at least five published posts:
– if you’ve added a featured tag in the Customizer and given some posts that tag, they will be displayed in the featured spots
– if you haven’t feature-tagged any posts but have sticky posts, those sticky posts will be displayed in the featured spots
– if you haven’t featured-tagged any posts and haven’t stickied any posts, the newest posts will be displayed in the featured spots. You can see an example of this variation on the WordPress.org demo site, where there are no feature-tagged or sticky posts present in the demo content.Just let me know if you have any other questions about Expound.

Thanks, I didn’t realize sticky would work like featured.
questions:
1. (mtowle3308’s main question) How do you get the featured posts to display horizontally in a line the way they do in demo themes, and how to make sure they DONT do that (I prefer them displayed vertically, the way they seem to default to on both his and my blog).
2. Why is it so hard to find these kind of specs and details about a theme???
(fyi the demo-site link you gave goes to a page that doesnt’ look a thing like expound –sort of blank and featureless, plus gives no actual info about it.)When I went to my dashboard>appearance>themes there’s just a minimal description of my current theme, no details. I also tried >customize — also very minimal info: “Your theme supports up to 5 posts in its featured content area.” Nothing about how to line them up/ sticky vs featured vs unmarked, etc. Is there some place I don’t know to access more detailed info about one’s theme?

There isn’t a way to display all posts one underneath the other in Expound if you have more than five published posts. Expound is specifically designed to pull out the first five posts and display them in a special way (large one on top, with four more in a row side-by-side) whether you’ve tagged or stickied them or not.
If you don’t like the way that works, you’ll probably be happier with a different theme, since this isn’t something that can be chnaged in Expound.
2. Why is it so hard to find these kind of specs and details about a theme???
The information about how a theme works is found on each theme’s showcase page. For example, here is the showcase page for Expound, which includes all the info I mentioned above:
https://wordpress.com/themes/expound
The theme’s showcase page is the best place to find information about each WordPress.com theme.
(fyi the demo-site link you gave goes to a page that doesnt’ look a thing like expound –sort of blank and featureless, plus gives no actual info about it.)
That’s the demo site on WordPress.org (self-hosted WordPress), and it was only provided to show how Expound will pull in the site’s latest five posts, even if none is stickied or marked with the featured tag.
The WordPress.com demo for Expound is here:

Thanks for the links!
I have 67 posts, and they do line up vertically on my home page the way I like them – apparently if you tag fewer than five posts as “featured” they default to stacking vertically.I wasn’t sure what the upper limit was, so far I’ve only ever marked 3 posts at a time as ‘featured’, I guess I can have up to four before Expound lines them up horizontally.

That’s right. You can’t mix-and-match techniques – once you activate the feature-tag method in the Customizer, the theme will display as many posts as you’ve tagged in the special format above the rest of your posts, up to five: one large featured post at the top, and four smaller ones lined up side-by-side below that one.
Just let me know if you have any other questions.
