Howdy –
Plugins are supported with the WordPress installation that you use with a hosting company. That is different from what we do here at WordPress.com.
Check out this guide for more differences between the 2 versions of WordPress: https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Hi there,
Thank you for your reply, which has at least cleared some concepts in my mind. Unfortunately, it doesn’t say much about my original question. As you might have guessed, I am a beginner in the WordPress scene. I have made start with fully hosted WordPress and I have chosen a free theme -Twenty Eleven. That theme comes with a series of plugins. Extended Shortcodes is one of the included plugins and WorPress admin shows that plugin as ‘active’. From that, I have assumed that I should to be able to create posts which include shortcodes. Unfortunately I can’t find a way to achieve that.
Consequently, I am looking for information on the use the Extended Shortcodes plugin in general. An more specifically, how to use Extended Shortcodes to create posts which include shortcodes in my Twenty Eleven theme on fully hosted WordPress.
Regards. -
Every WordPress.COM theme has a detailed theme description page and this one is at https://wordpress.com/themes/twentyeleven/ That’s where set up instructions for it are found and the link to the live demo site.
No plugins are required for the WordPress.COM theme version at all.
There is no FTP access to wordpress.com blogs and no blogger installed plugin capability. Those exist only on wordpress.ORG software installs and no upgrade alters that reality. WordPress.COM hosted sites have some built in plugins. You can verify that by reading the entry Staff linked to above at http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/
No FTP access http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
No blogger installed plugins http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/I believe you will benefit from reading this closely:

Thanks for contributing, timethief.
lovespanishwp – Please reply with any further questions about the differences in WordPress.com and self hosted WordPress sites. But, if your site is not hosted with WordPress.com you’ll need to post at wordpress.org/support/ for help with it.

First of all, I apologise if I did not make my problem sufficiently clear.
lizkarkoski – Thanks for emphasising the difference between WordPress.com and self hosted WordPress sites. I think I have got it now and confirm that my site, https://lovespanishblog.wordpress.com/ is hosted on WordPress.com (as the URL appears to indicate)
timethief – Also for clarification, I confirm am not trying to download, use FTP or install plugins from anywhere on my site. All I am only trying do is to make use of standard WordPress.com plugin functionality which is included and allegedly ‘active’ in my Twenty Eleven theme.
I appreciate your “No blogger installed plugins” link http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/
Clicking on that link it takes me to, what I think is the WordPress.com plugin support page, where it says, and I quote:
“Plugins on WordPress.com
On WordPress.com, we include the most popular plugin functionality within our sites automatically.
Built-in plugin functionality includes (but is not limited to) the following:”A long list of ‘built in’ plugins follows. That list includes the item “Extended Shortcodes (video, audio, and more)”
What I am looking for is specific information (a guide/ tutorial/ help/ etc.) on the use of the “Extended Shortcodes (video, audio, and more)” plugin.
