Extending header in Sight theme
-
Hi, I am getting some push back on handling the footer in any other way than at the bottom with links. Putting it in a sidebar text widget won’t fly with my superiors.
We embed an SSI direct within the CSS for the footer, as you see below.
Do you see any way of making this happen for the WordPress blog?
Thanks for your patience on this, Jean
CSS
#footer {
background: #f8f8f8 url(/images/global/footer-seawolf.jpg) left no-repeat;
border-top: 3px solid #4e6581;
color: #4a4a4a;
float: left;
font: 11px Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
height: 84px;
position: relative;
margin: 7px 0 20px 0;
width: 960px;
}
#footer p {padding: 14px 0 0 215px;line-height: 14px;}
#footer span.bold {font-weight: bold;font-size: 12px;}
#footer a {color: #4A6395;text-decoration: none;}
#footer a:hover {color: #3399ca;text-decoration: underline;}SSI

Not at WordPress.com. This would require editing and changing of the theme php script files for the footer, and we cannot do that at WordPress.com.
The only solution, if this is a no-go from your superiors, would be to self-host your own WordPress installation using the software from WordPress.org. It may be that your IT people could set all that up for you on the servers they are using for the rest of the University web site(s), or it could also be self-hosted on another web hosting service. Here are some references for you.

I totally understand this.
How about showing this at as the footer with the URLS displayed as below:
Sonoma State University, University Affairs
707.664.2122 • 1801 East Cotati Ave • Rohnert Park, CA 94928• Contact (www.sonoma.edu/about/contact.html)
• The California State University System (www.calstate.edu)
• COPLAC (www.coplac.org)
• College Portrait (www.collegeportraits.org/CA/SSU/)
• Download Plugins (www.sonoma.edu/about/plugins.html)
• Website Feedback (www.sonoma.edu/problem_report.shtml)Would you also explain what is in the “before” and “after” content area
Thanks, Jean

Jean, there isn’t a way to do line breaks and such with this workaround for adding things to the footer. This is typically used for just a few words or something like that.
The only thing I can think of would be to make that block of text into an image. A PNG with a transparent background would likely work best. Then we could add that using a “content” declaration.
:before and :after are what are called pseudo selectors, or pseudo elements and allow you to add content before or after another HTML element in a web page. You can read more about them here.

If you wish to make that image, or have someone make it, upload it to your media library and we can see if we can get it in there and working correctly. I’m a little concerned about smaller screens, such as phones and small tablets.
