The categories and tags you choose to assign to your posts will cause them to display both on the posts themselves and on the wordpress.com global tagging pages. If you place the Categories widget in your sidebar then when readers click it they will be directed only to your own posts withing the given category. If you choose not to use categories and tags on your posts then they will not fisplay on the posts themselves, on the wordpress.com gobal tagging pages, or in the search engines results (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.).
There are two themes you can choose to use that will allow you the option of displaying Categories where the static Pages are normally displayed ie. across the top horizontal menu. They are Inove and Monochrome. When it comes to Vigilance there is a trick you can use to create the same thing.

I do not consider this to be a problem because every successful blog gains approximately 40% of the traffic inflow of targeted readers who are looking for information the blog contains from search engines. WordPres.com SEO is excellent and my blogs benefit from the flow readers that come to me by way of the wordpress.com global tagging pages.
