Externally hosted videos in thumbnail gallery (portfolio style) on WordPress.com

How do I post externally hosted video files in a thumbnail gallery in WordPress.com (like a portfolio)? I can’t use external plug-ins, and there’s not a way to do this in the gallery section of a page. All I want is a gallery of images… you click on an image and a lightbox pops up with an embedded video. I don’t need Videopress because all of the videos are already hosted. Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

Currently, you cannot set the URL for images within a gallery to open a video (I believe that’s what you’re looking for). By default, the gallery images will link to their attachment pages.

However, you can definitely embed the videos into a post on your WordPress.com site. How are your current videos hosted? Are they on YouTube? If so, you can just paste the URL within a post as explained here:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/

We also support embedding through many other formats as explained here:

    Working With Video

Would one of those options work? Please let me know if I misunderstood your question!

Thanks. With the wordpress.com functionality, is there any way to have a sliding carousel of images, with each image opening a light box to video or even linking to another page?

    Hi!

There are certain themes like Oxygen that have a featured content slider. When you click on an image within the slider, you will be taken to the individual post page as shown here:

    http://oxygendemo.wordpress.com/

Is that along the lines of what you’re looking for? Currently, there isn’t a feature that allows you to add a slider to a theme. Themes have to come with sliders as a built-in functionality. The closest thing to what you’re describing would be galleries, but as I mentioned, users aren’t able to specify the click URLs for images in galleries. They automatically open to the attachment page.

Let me know if the Oxygen slider is similar to what you are looking for!

    Hi Jeremey,

I’m giving the Oxygen theme a shot, and using the tutorial on the Oxygen theme page to try to get it running (http://alienwp.com/documentation/oxygen-theme-documentation/). However, I am not seeing what the instructions are referencing, right from the beginning. On Step 1, I don’t have a “Front Page” option in my Template dropdown list.

Looking closer at the screenshot on the tutorial, I don’t have a few of the other items (like the bar at the top), which makes me think something isn’t correct with how I’m using the editor. Any ideas? I can send you a screenshot if you send me an email address.

    Thanks,

    Matt

    Hey Matt!

I’d recommend actually following the instructions on WordPress.com here:

    http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/oxygen/

There appear to be a few differences in the theme documentation. For example, on the WordPress.com support page, the page template is labeled “Showcase Page” rather than “Front Page”.

Can you try to setup the theme according to the instructions on the page I mentioned and let me know if you run into any trouble?
