extra benefits of custom domain

  • Unknown's avatar

If I purchase custom domain (at 18 dollars per year) from my current wordpress blog,
    1. Do I get extra GB space as opposed to current 3 GB? How much GB?
    2. Do I get extra email id free or have to purchase it? How many extra email ids do I get?
    3. Do I have to purchase plug-ins separately?
    4. Is any software programming needed for custom domain design and maintenance?
    5. Will I get extra themes/templates when I purchase custom domain as opposed to limited templates at present?
    6. If I want to cover .com, .org, .net etc for my domain name, do I need to make separate payments for each?
    7. In that case, do renewal fees need to be paid to wordpress together or to each of these servers separately?

  • If you purchase a custom domain, all you get is a custom domain, i.e. not yourblog.wordpress.com, but simply yourblog.com. Nothing else.

You’ll still be on wordpress.com, so bound by exactly the same terms and conditions, access to the same themes (free or premium for which you must pay) and widgets, no ability to upload custom themes or plugins, full hosting by wp.com including the technical support you currently have, and the same 3GB media storage. Custom design is a completely separate upgrade.

If you go to Store in your dashboard you’ll see there’s an option to buy a premium bundle which includes a custom domain, space upgrade and custom design all in one for $99. But the previous paragraph still applies in other respects.

That’s opposed to self-hosted where your storage space is determined by your host, you can upload any themes and install any plugins, but if anything breaks you have to fix it yourself, etc.

You can buy a custom domain through wordpress.com or you can buy it through another registrar if you want and simply buy the mapping upgrade on wordpress.com to connect it to your free wp.com site. If you buy the domain through wordpress.com mapping is included. Renewal fees for the domain is paid to wordpress if you registered it through wordpress, or else to the registrar through whom you bought the domain.

If you want to purchase multiple domains and have them all point at your blog, you can do so (though I’m not sure if you can do so through wordpress), but you’ll have to register and pay for each one. It works exactly the same if you’re self-hosted.

See here for more info on domains on WP.com: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

Here for more info in the difference between WP.com and WP.org, or self-hosted: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

  • The domain registration just gets you the use of a custom domain, most of the things you have listed are seperate upgrades. So the answer to most of your questions is going to be “no”. I will go through them all one by one however just so we are on the same page.

    1. Do I get extra GB space as opposed to current 3 GB? How much GB?

Extra storage space requires the Space Upgrade:

    Space Upgrade

    2. Do I get extra email id free or have to purchase it? How many extra email ids do I get?

You have two options for email with WordPress.com:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/add-email/

    or

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/email-forwarding/

    3. Do I have to purchase plug-ins separately?

While plugins are common on self hosted WordPress sites, due to security concerns, they are not available on WordPress.com. There is more info regarding WordPress.com and plugins here:

    Plugins

    4. Is any software programming needed for custom domain design and maintenance?

    No.

    5. Will I get extra themes/templates when I purchase custom domain as opposed to limited templates at present?

Premium themes are a separate upgrade:

    Premium Themes

    6. If I want to cover .com, .org, .net etc for my domain name, do I need to make separate payments for each?

Yes, each domain extension (org, com, net, etc) requires its own registration.

    7. In that case, do renewal fees need to be paid to wordpress together or to each of these servers separately?

This list of extensions that can be registered through WordPress.com can be found here:

    Domains

If you are looking to register an extension that is not listed there, you will need to use a different registrar (godaddy for example) and then map that domain to Word Press.com using these instructions:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Let me know if you have any further questions.

    Thank you for the clarifications.
I finally understood why some websites have owners asking for financial support!
I guess I will stick to wordpress hosted domain.
