Extra line breaks are added after images each time I save a post.

I’ve been going back and inserting pictures into posts that I’ve written. However, every time I save that post, an extra line break gets inserted after the picture (and sometimes between random paragraphs). Every time I open a post for editing and then save it, another line break gets added. The gaps after the pictures then get longer and longer, and I have to manually delete all these extra lines every time.

Is there any way to stop this from happening? You can see my posts here:

I should say that I’m completely new to online blogging. I don’t use HTML code at all and know nothing about it. I simply write in Microsoft Word as normal and then copy and paste into the Visual window in WordPress. Then I add images using the image URL from Flickr.

Any advice you can give me would be MUCH appreciated! Thanks. Doug

By the way, I’ve used different themes and it happens in each one. I’m currently using the Journalist theme.

Thank you, panaghiotisadam. That helps a lot. It never occurred to me that there would be a problem copying and pasting from Word. This probably explains why I’ve had so many (bizarre) problems with so many different online blogging tools. I’ve tried a bunch of them and found them all frustrating in the extreme – to that point that I just gave up.

A follow-up question, though: What about saving a Word file as a text file (txt), and then copying and pasting that into WordPress? Or do txt files also produce a lot of problematic tags?

Thanks again. With that bit of information, you’ve saved me a lot of trouble and frustration!

Unfortunately I don’t know about .txt files. Here’s what I know you can do:

For future posts you can either write directly in the wp Visual editor, of course, or write in a simple text editor such as Notepad, or use the “Paste from Word” icon in your Visual editor.

For the posts you have already published, you can copy-paste their text into a simple text editor and back to the wp editor again, or you can select the text and use the “Eraser” icon to remove its formatting.

(By the way: sooner or later you’ll probably find that you do need some HTML – for instance when you’ll happen to really want extra line breaks!)

Thank you again, Panaghiotisadam, for pointing me in the right direction. I think I’m well on my way to getting all this figured out now.

Writing in Notepad is a reasonable solution for me. However, I did some reading up on desktop editors for blogs (a brand new concept to me – I’d never even heard of them before), and it seems like they might be the way to go.

I just downloaded Windows Live Writer and used it to post to my WordPress blog and it worked very well. I haven’t explored it very much yet, but it looks promising. I like the way it handles pictures in particular. It allows me to insert a picture of any size from my computer, and it automatically resizes it to give me small, medium, large, and original sizes to choose from.

I suppose typing directly into WordPress would avoid all formatting and tags problems completely, but for me that isn’t a viable option. Internet Explorer and my Internet connection are not reliable on my computer and things are constantly freezing and crashing etc. I’d be constantly losing what I’d already typed. That’s why I always write offline, save it to my hard drive, and then copy and paste to the Internet. Using Windows Live Writer might be a good compromise betweent the two options.

I’ll use your advice about copying and pasting previous posts into a simple text editor to clean them up. That’s not a big deal though since I don’t have many previous posts of any note that I’m concerned about.

Thanks for your help! I’ll call this question “resolved.”
