Extremely Disturbing Tags that Auto-Populate
-
A few months ago I was writing a blog post about the Muslim ban, and in the ‘tags’ section I found that when I typed just the letters ‘M-U-S-L’ the first option to auto-populate was ‘exterminate all Muslims’ along with some other extremely disturbing tags. Should WordPress be complicit in allowing it’s algorithim to propagate such hateful and utterly shameful tags for its users? What is wordpress going to do to prevent this sort of thing in the future? I would provide a screenshot but there is no option to do so. I expect a prompt response.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi graysunlight,
A tag has been added for staff to look at your post. I can’t answer your question because I don’t know the technology that helps with auto-population of tags. But, given your expectation of a prompt response, I’ll ask you to please be patient. Especially when it comes algorithms that create the tags automatically, staff may need to do some research before they’re ready to respond, even writing a ticket to modify the algorithm. That takes time. Click subscribe on this thread and you’ll be notified when a response is made.
There is a guideline written for user’s content:
It also would be good to have photographic evidence to help the programmers should they seek to modify the algorithm. Use this guide to get a screenshot and then upload it to your media library. Staff can reference it from there. Let us know when you have it posted.
Again, thank you for your patience.
Best,

Hi there,
I’m not exactly sure what you’re speaking of. Do you mean when you are adding tags in the post editor? The tag autocomplete only suggests tags that are already in use on your site. We don’t use any algorithms to suggest tags in the editor.
Also, on which site is this? I see only two sites in your account, https://controlaltdeleteright.wordpress.com/ and https://guerillarecovery.wordpress.com/. The first only has default content on it and the second hasn’t been updated since 2014.
You can upload your screen shot to your site’s media library, or you can use a service like snag.gy to share it here.

It was on a blog I wrote for briefly. I’d that’s the case I’ll bring it up with them. As far as a screenshot goes I have one ready but I think it’s strange I cant just upload it here, instead I have to do it on the back end and let engineers go find it

Okay, that is not the dashboard for a WordPress.com site, but is instead a site using the self-hosted WordPress.org software. The WordPress.org software also don’t use algorithms to suggest tags, but it’s possible that site has a plugin installed, most likely an SEO plugin, that adds that feature to the site.
Most likely that plugin uses an API with a search engine and suggest tags based on popular search terms, the reasoning being if you tag your post with the same terms it’s more likely to come up in search results. This is just a guess, but it’s an educated guess in this case. Please follow up with the admins of the site, as they’re the ones who installed the plugin.
