I am unable to connect my Facebook account using the sharing feature. I hit the connect tab and it does not direct me to facebook. What other steps can I take?

The issue could be related to a recent change of policy by Facebook, see here: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/publicize-changes/.
If your Facebook account does not have a Page to connect to, then most probably you’ll not be able to connect WordPress.com to Facebook.
To share your posts to Facebook profile, you can either manually copy the link of the post to create a new Facebook post or convert your Facebook profile to a page.
If you have a Facebook page but still unable to connect. you may add a modlook tag at the right-hand side of this screen to seek help from the Staff.
