Facebook and Twitter lost numbers & HTTPS

    So this has been happening off and on with my blog for a number of years now. Sometimes twitter and facebook likes and shares would show. Sometimes, they would not. About a year ago, twitter shares stopped showing altogether. Now, tonight at least, the facebook shares are gone.

    An old topic by the same name addressed this issue in 2014, but it appears that it is still unresolved.

    Hi there,

    Twitter no longer returns share counts via their API, so that data does not exist any more for us to show.

    Facebook returns share counts based on your site’s URL, so if the URL has changed, that would cause the count to reset on your Facebook button.

    If you haven’t recently made a change like this, can you please give me a link to a post that you know had definitely shown a sharing count before?

    Thanks so much. It’s more an issue that the like counts for facebook have been flickering on and off. It happens to all posts and either they show, or they don’t.

    Thanks. It appears this might be an issue on Facebook’s end. Our developers are in contact with them to try and get it fixed. I’ll let you know if there’s any progress on this.

    Hi there,

    Just an update. Facebook has confirmed it’s a bug on their end and are working to fix it. Meanwhile you can get the sharing counts to show by switching to the official button styles under My Site ->Sharing ->Buttons, as the official buttons don’t appear to be affected by this bug.

    According to Facebook this should be fixed now, so if you switch back to your old sharing button style you should see the share count again. You might also need to clear your browser cache for it to update.

    If it’s still not showing the share count for you, please let me know.
