Facebook auto post not picking up featured image

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello, I’m after a bit of a advice, I recently started a Facebook page and now when I publish a post it publishes it to Facebook for me. I also publicize to Twitter and G+.
Anyways…What I have noticed is that it is picking up a random photo to use as a featured image on my Facebook page – more annoyingly, its not even picking up an image that is in the post either, its picking out my most recent image from Instagram!
I have the Instagram widget in my sidebar and that’s the image its using on my facebook page! Any advice on how I can alter this?

  • Hi there,

We have no direct control over which image Facebook uses. However, if you have a featured image we “suggest” that Facebook uses that image, else any other image in the post, else your blavatar.

But Facebook has their own requirements regarding image file type and image size, and if none of those images meet those requirements, Facebook will use any image it finds on your site.

I ran your site through the Facebook Debugger (https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object/) and it’s showing me that your blavatar is being shared for your home page URL and the image in your About Me widget for your most recent post.

Using the debugger to “force” Facebook to look for a different image is really the only thing we can do in this case.
