Facebook does not display post properly

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
For the past couple of weeks, I am not able to share my WP posts on FB properly. Instead of displaying the post thumbnail, and the intro text, it shows my Blavatar. How can I fix this?
    Thanks for your suggestions!

Since it’s a matter of an external platform (FB), so there might be several reasons. Did you try with setting ‘Featured Image’?

I’ve seen that where there is no featured image, FB share windows may get the page’s first image as the first thumbnail (if there are more images, it can be changed on the window).

However, if you share the link by pasting it into the Facebook’s on-board post box, it will show a preview of the link where you can upload an image for thumbnail.

    Hi Arafatbs,

    Thanks for the reply.

I have indeed set the featured image, and that does not change anything. Also, when I click on the FB sharing button, I get the same problem. There is no longer an option to change the thumbnail (at least that I can see). This is completely different from how sharing on posts on FB behaved in the past.

Hi, what I’ve seen that the latest post of your blog is facing the FB thumbnail issue. The link of that post is: http://francesays.com/2015/08/13/les-souvenirs/

I also faced such issue in past. I have a tric which worked for me. That is, editing the post’s URL so that FB can load the content fresh. Suppose, your post URL is ‘http://francesays.com/2015/08/13/les-souvenirs/’, but if you edit the URL like this ‘http://francesays.com/2015/08/13/les-souvenirs-post-updated/’, it might solve the thumbnail issue for this specific post. It is a random problem, how far I’ve seen.

We have no control over the images that Facebook or any other social networks chooses to display or when they choose to flush their image caches. We really only send them the URL of the post, and they hunt through that for the excerpt and images to include.

Thanks, thistimethispace, for your advice. Unfortunately, none of the above solutions works. I get a 404 error on the debug tool, but it’s not clear what needs to be done to fix it.

Specifically, the FB debug page says:
Critical errors that must be fixed: URL returned a bad HTTP response code.
Errors that must be fixed: The ‘og:type’ property is required, but not present.
Any ideas what this means or what I need to do to fix it?

My suggestion is: Edit your post’s URL. See my previous comment on this topic. And after editing the URL, update the post. Hope it helps.

Afafatbs, I have tried this, twice now to be sure, and it does not work!

Hi, I apologize if the trick was unsuccessful. I see the URL of the post same still now. Did you revert it to the original? May be.

    Yesterday that post’s link was:
    http://francesays.com/2015/08/13/les-souvenirs/

And still now that post’s link is the same.

My suggestion was to edit the “les-souvenirs/” part of the post’s URL. You can do it by going to the editing interface of that post. Here I’ve shared how I edited my post URL. Please see this image: https://arafatbs.files.wordpress.com/2015/08/fblink.jpg

I found this method working for me, if you change the URL, please share that new URL here. I will also test whether the trick works anymore.

I found thumbnail problem mainly with the latest post (Les souvenirs) of your site. The post “Beauty and the beast” works better than that.

    Good luck.

I just debugged the link on FB. I clicked on the “Fetch new scrape information” button on FB debug page. Now I can see the appropriate thumbnail for the “Les Souvenirs” post on my browser. Screenshot: https://arafatbs.files.wordpress.com/2015/08/les-souvenirs-fb.jpg

Oh, you are right! It now seems to work fine when I share it as well!
Just FYI, I did first try to change the url and repost as you suggested but when the result did not work, I changed it back. As for the FB debugging, I had no idea of how to obtain that result (did not click the button you clicked on to ‘fetch new scrape information’ as it did not seem obvious to me to do that ;0). Thanks a lot for your help!
