Facebook integration fails – how can I check why?
-
I’ve set up an integration between the WordPress site I edit and I page on Facebook where I am editor (FB: Shropshire and Staffordshire National Trust Volunteers (SSNTV)). Regularly posts are shared onto the FB page. Today 25.07.23 I made two new posts via WP on the web and the usual two screens appeared to publish and share to the Facebook page. The first post was shared, the second was not – WHY?
Via the WP admin console it appears the integration is still working, To check this, I generated a new third, Test post. This was successfully shared and published on FB. So integration is still working. I’ve since deleted this test post in WP and on FB.
So I tried copying the missing post #2 in WP and publishing the copy. Integration with FB failed again for this post alhtough it appears in FB!
What is special about post number #2 and it’s content -https://wordpress.com/post/ssntv.co.uk/9463 (actually now post #4) I wonder will this eventually get shared – but I put another in the queue and that’s already appeared on the FB side, so something’s not working correctly. There seems no way to check what’s gone wrong and no messaging??
Do I now have to share manually this time – what a pain!!!!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi! So I understand correctly, you’re finding that it consistently fails when you try to share this specific post content to Facebook?
We have fairly limited information on our side but it sounds like your connection between the blog and your Facebook page is working correctly.
When you tried to share post number 2 the first time around, did it show any sort of error message on the WordPress.com side of things?

Hi, thanks. Yes, no error messages at all. Only thing I can put this down to, is two posts not allowed in quick succession?

Thanks for confirming. I’ve looked on our end and the posts were published several hours apart, so that would not be the issue here. Digging a bit deeper though I was able to see that Facebook returned an error message on their end that was a bit mysterious
Error 500 (An unexpected error has occurred. Please retry your request later.)I don’t understand the nature of that message and I have not see reports of this from other site owners. The fact that Facebook includes a helpful hint to “retry your request later” seems to indicate that this is a transient issue on their end. I’m glad you were able to post manually so it may be the case that the issue on their end is resolved.
As you may be aware, Facebook likes to spring changes on folks (that tend to break thing on our end) but from what I can see I suspect you will be able to continue to share messages as usual. If this comes up again please let us know!
