Facebook Like Box: why have it?

Okay, I have a facebook page — which I’m trying to be better about using, but really, I’m not a natural Facebook user — I also have the share & like FB buttons enabled on my posts & pages. I understand the sharing options & why they’re good. But I really don’t understand why I would want or need a FB Like Box as a widget in my sidebar.

I’m not being flippant or sarcastic here — I just don’t get it. Why would I want people who visit my blog to like my FB page? Like I say, I’m really not all that FB-savvy & don’t use it much, so I am sure that there’s some very good reason for it that I just don’t get. After all, I’ve seen how many people were slathering for just such an option back before it was available. So there must be something good about it. But it just seems odd to me. Could someone explain the rationale? I may or may not add an FB like widget, but I’d like to decide based on understanding rather than on ignorance!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I think Like is for people who “don’t want to clutter up their wall” etc. And surprisingly, there are a lot of those. Also, a Like is less of an endorsement than a share. There are lots of people who want a low-barrier way to say Thumbs-up. Give them the option. More engagement options is always better.

I’ll think about adding it, then.

I presume that if people use the new widget, the click will get counted in our stats? (So if after a while, no one uses it, I’ll know & can remove it.)

It’ll show up on Clicks, yes. I have a Badge in the sidebar of one of my sites, which is basically a passive Like Our Page ad, and it’s doubled my Likes in a year without me doing anything at all.
