Facebook like button turned to share button

  • Unknown's avatar

A couple of days ago I noticed the Facebook “like button” after my posts became the “share button”. How do I turn it back to the like one ?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there!

You can adjust your sharing button style here:

    https://vinologique.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=sharing

Adjust your Button Style until you see the style you want in the Live Preview section above.

I hope this helps! If you have any other concerns, drop me a note. Thanks much!

    Hi
thanks for replying but actually that’s the first thing I tried (both on IE and Chrome). :(
It doesn’t matter which style I pick, It has changed to the share function. Since I never changed it manually in the first place, it seems that the source code has been altered… Can you please take a look ?
    Thanks !

    Hi again,

To confirm, is it these buttons that have changed?:

If so, which buttons did you want instead?

If you are talking about another button, please let me know!

    Thank you!

Yes, these are the buttons allright.

But what I mean is that the Facebook one untill a few days ago displayed “Curtir” (Like, in Portuguese) and now it shows “Compartilhar” (= Share, in Portuguese). I don’t want to change the button layout, I need to change its function. I want my followers to be able to like the post with their Facebook account (as they did until recently) instead of sharing it.

In a more perfect scenario, I would have both but I don’t think its possible. Right now if I can turn it back to likes it would already be great. :)

    Hello again!

That explains things. Thank you so much.

It appears as if there was a proposal to change the verbiage for that Portuguese label. You may want to become part of the discussion, if this is important to you! Here is information about how to get involved with translation in GlotPress:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/glotpress/

In the meantime, you can make an adjustment to your current buttons:
    https://vinologique.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=sharing&update=saved

You can do two things (if you wish):

First you can change the overall sharing label from Compartilhar to anything else that suits you better.

Next, you can change your buttons style from Official Buttons, to ICON ONLY or ICON + TEXT. Both of those options will remove the word, “Compartilhar,” from your Facebook button.

Make sure you save your changes.

Let me know if that solution works for you, which you’re making your suggestion to the Portuguese WordPress community!

    Thank you.

    Hi !

in fact it’s not only the label of the button that has changed. If you click on it, no matter which style I choose, the Facebook share window is prompted. Again, my issue is not about the wording, I would be fine having a share button if I also had the like button as before. I don’t get why it has suddenly changed functions.

Since I also promote my posts on my Facebook page, people who want to share them do it directly and they don’t use WordPress Like button because you need to register on WordPress.

Having a Facebook Like button is pretty much standard here in all kinds of websites, from blogs to media outlets, and it’s hard for me to engage with readers if I don’t have the tools they use most. :(

Isn’t there any other way I can have this button back ?

    Thanks

    Hello there!

I thought you were mainly having a semantics/translation issue! Yes, you are right, the sharing button has changed. The majority of folks wanted their Facebook sharing button to allow their readers to share their post/page on their Facebook walls. It’s really the main reason that sharing buttons exist.

There isn’t a way to add the like button back, unfortunately. If you would like to garner more likes at Facebook, the like button will have to be clicked on your Facebook post.

So sorry I can’t make this adjustment for you, however if I can help with anything else, please let me know. Thank you!

I’m also very disappointed about this change. Why can’t you give us option to select if we prefer share or like button?

  • Unknown's avatar

Thank you for your reply and for being so thoughtful, @thatrobyn.

I was never asked which button I preferred, so it surprises me to know that the majority wanted this change… I completely agree with @freestylevoguing, we should be able to choose, since both functions are useful. Many other sites actually have both buttons, so WordPress should offer both too.

    Really sad about this. :(

I was recently told (about ten minutes ago, actually) that FB is making this transition all around – that we are navigating away from Likes and straight to Shares, because Sharing = $$.

    @mrsaubreyb :'( nevermind user satisfaction, right ?

    Hi MrsAubreyB,

I was recently told (about ten minutes ago, actually) that FB is making this transition all around

Very interesting. Do you have a link to this information at all? I’d love to have it for reference! Thanks for sharing :)

I hate the change I want my like button back :(

  • Unknown's avatar

here’s the deal! I don’t know that it’s actually FB doing this. I just updated my plugins on one of my blogs and it was jetpack, which is what I use for the buttons. On my other 20 something blogs I have to still update, they have like buttons so I’m grabbing the plugin for jetpack from the other site and putting it back over on the one I updated. Sad I won’t update jetpack any more now!

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi again!

I was also thinking that, if you’re concerned mainly with self-hosted sites, you can install a plugin that is outside the scope of Jetpack:
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/search.php?q=facebook+like

You may have more options out there. So, don’t give up entirely on the idea of upgrading Jetpack AND having the Facebook like button that you want!

I hope this helps! If you have any other concerns, drop me a note. Thanks much!

Did somebody understand what’s happening. I want my like button back

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hey there,

This isn’t possible. Your Facebook likes will only be recorded on Facebook.

Only the amount of shares of your WordPress.com posts/pages to Facebook will be recorded by that button.

    Thanks.
