Facebook like counter
-
Hi, few days ago I noticed that the Facebook like counter on each of my posts has changed. Most of my older posts had their counter reset to zero. Others dramatically decreased. For example, this post had more than 10k likes, now has only 13:
https://ilblogstruggentediunformidabilegenio.wordpress.com/2013/11/18/non-per-un-dio-ma-nemmeno-per-gioco-gli-amici-che-fanno-medicina/
I do not use “official” buttons and I have tried to switch to all other styles available but I wasn’t able to solve my problem. I also tried to restore the correct Facebook share counts using the Facebook debug tool (as I read here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/facebook-like-counter-on-posts-reset-to-zero-2?replies=14#post-2253421) but it didn’t work too.

Hi @renatonicassio,
It looks like you recently removed the domain mapping upgrade for ilblogstruggentediunformidabilegenio.com from your site ilblogstruggentediunformidabilegenio.wordpress.com. When you remove or add a custom domain to your site, the sharing numbers reflected by all of your sharing buttons will change.
Previously, when you loaded a post, we “pinged” Facebook asking how many times it has seen that post URL across its service. The URL look like this:
Now, since the custom domain was removed the URL looks like this:
Non per un dio ma nemmeno per gioco: gli amici che fanno medicina
The difference in the domain causes Facebook to return a different number. I’m afraid the only way around this would be to either A) put the domain mapping upgrade back in place or B) move forward with the default .wordpress.com URL and begin accumulating shares on that domain.
Let me know if you have any additional questions!

Hi, first of all thanks for you answer!
Yes, you’re right: I removed the domain mapping upgrade. But actually I’ve never used it. I bought it for some test but in practice I’ve never activated that domain: my posts were always published with the “wordpress.com” URL.
I’ve tried to use the Facebook debugger with the post I linked before and I’ve noticed that the difference of sharing numbers can be traced back to the switch from http to https.
Here, the canonical URL is https://ilblogstruggentediunformidabilegenio.wordpress.com/2013/11/18/non-per-un-dio-ma-nemmeno-per-gioco-gli-amici-che-fanno-medicina/ and the sharing number is only 10.<img src=”http://i60.tinypic.com/sc5f6r.jpg” border=”0″ alt=”Image and video hosting by TinyPic”>
Whereas the original URL is:
<img src=”http://i59.tinypic.com/16hp2m8.jpg” border=”0″ alt=”Image and video hosting by TinyPic”>As you can see the sharing number is 14969 likes, which is the number I used to see in my wordpress Facebook counter before the “https switch”. So I think my problem is due to this switch rather than the removal of a domain I never used

Thanks for getting back with me @renatonicassio! I’m not sure exactly what happened here. I’m reaching out to our developers to see if we can get to the bottom of the issue. I’ll report back as soon as I know more!

Hi!
It seems all has gone back to normal: sharings and likes are back
thank you very much! -
Not a problem! If you experience this behavior in the future, please reach out and let us know.

Hi!
Unfortunately, it seems I am experiencing this behavior once again. The Facebook like counter on each of my posts has gone back to the wrong values I noticed three weeks ago. Yesterday all sharings and likes were perfect.
The blog I need help with is still ilblogstruggentediunformidabilegenio.wordpress.com. -
Hi there! We recently updated our Facebook share buttons because we were counting some shares twice.
Can you link me to a specific post that you’re seeing this happen on and the number you were seeing before?
-
Hi!
Same example I’ve posted above. This post had more than 10k likes, now has only 14:
https://ilblogstruggentediunformidabilegenio.wordpress.com/2013/11/18/non-per-un-dio-ma-nemmeno-per-gioco-gli-amici-che-fanno-medicina/As I said before it seems to me that all this has something to do with the “https” switch.

The way shares are counted has been changed recently. For older posts like the one you linked the change will be the most dramatic as shares from the http version of the post can no longer be included in the count. For new posts, all the shares will be on the https version of the post so you won’t have the same problem.
-
Hi, but then how is it possible that two weeks ago this same “inconvenient” was fixed?
Anyways, I’ve exeperienced this change also for the newest posts.
This one, for example, was published on April 9th (and its Url was https), and had more than 600 shares. Yesterday had 380. Today has 320.
https://ilblogstruggentediunformidabilegenio.wordpress.com/2015/04/09/il-118-su-whatsapp-gli-amici-medici-e-gli-amici-ammalati/And I could say the same for oher posts.
Thank you -
There have been several changes to how the sharing counts work over the last several weeks, and I get why that would be frustrating. Here’s the rundown of what has changed.
The process we used to include the count from the http version of posts sometimes resulted in shares being counted twice. This process is no longer being used. That means older posts will have a reduced share count. It may also mean that newer posts may have fewer shares because the previous count was inflated.
Facebook also made changes to the way services connect to their site. A change like this can introduce bugs on both sides of the equation. We are working with Facebook to get those all ironed out.
I expect you will continue to see some fluctuations for a little while longer, but we are aware of the issue and working to resolve it.
