Do you want a Facebook Like button that opens right in your blog?
Doing so in an instantly visible way is not possible at wordpress.com, since it requires you to put an iframe code that doesn’t work in wordpress.com.
However, it is possible to add a Facebook Like button in your side bar in a different way.
If a reader creates a “text link” the Facebook Like button will appear right in your blog by replacing the text link. A reader can see how many likes you have gotten and (s)he can also “like” your blog without leaving your blog.
See an example Facebook Like button in a wordpress.com side barIf you like what you see, I can give you the how-to.

WordPress.com provides social networks sharing buttons that will appear at the end of all of your entries for use by your readers. As they appear on posts and are linked to post URLs they are far more relevant and meanigful than a link that appears in your sidebar is.
Sharing options > http://en.support.wordpress.com/sharing/
WordPress.com also provides a Facebook badge you can place in your sidebar. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/facebook-badge/
Thridly, WordPress.com provides Publicize so snippets of your blog post and their URLs can be posted to Facebook, Twitter and Yahoo. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/publicize/

dannyjbent,
None of the solutions in the post above this one does what a Like button in the side bar does.
A like button in the side bar lets readers like the blog. It also enables your readers to share your blog in Facebook with a comment at the same time.Just stating out the differences so that you can choose what you need.

HI Sanjidas, thanks so much for your help. What I am after is a widget in the side bar like the below:
http://www.thecyclediaries.com/
When I copy the widget from Facebook this is what the say it will look like but somewhere between posting it into my text box it just becomes text.

dannyjbent,
What you see in the blog you mentioned is a Facebook likebox and it can’t be installed in a free wordpress.com blog the way you see it there. Because that is an iframe widget and iframe codes don’t work in a free wordpress.com blog.
However a workaround is available.
You can add a “text link” in a box. When the text link is clicked the Facebook Likebox replaces the text link and loads in the box right in your blog.If this compromise doesn’t bother you, you can find an example and the instructions here:

Sanjidas – so do I have to upgrade to get the link. I’m happy to pay a little bit if that’d help? I did buy my site http://www.patagoniatoperu.com but I suspect I need more!??!

I am sorry but I really don’t know if iframes can be used if you pay a little more.
I am leaving it for someone else to give you the right answer.
