Facebook referrals digit counter no longer appearing in comments
-
When I share a WP post to Facebook, it does indeed appear there, but the little FB icon which appears under comments at the end of the WP post in question no longer displays the number of times someone has visited from the FB post. I used to be encouraged by the FB digits going up at my WP blogsite but now they never show. I’m not sure the FB connection is correctly set up, or maybe it’s disconnected?

Facebook discontinued this feature in their API almost a year ago, so we have no way to collect numbers for our buttons.
The only way to display those numbers now is to switch to the “Official Buttons” style: https://wordpress.com/support/sharing/#customizing-sharing-settings

Thanx, MacManx! That clears up lack of digits, but there is something else I don’t understand. When I posted to FB from my WP blog recently the photo link that automatically went took people who clicked on the photo to a WP post on the site dated 2009! Normally on FB clicking the automatically generated photo of the blog banner pic delivers one to the top page where the new post is to be found. The URL (in blue within the text of the referral works fine, though). Why would an automatic link posted to FB from the latest post on my WP top page get associated with an old post from way back? I’d appreciate to hear if you have any ideas of how to solve this in case it happens again. Thanx!

Can you give us the URL of the specific post on your site that’s linking to the wrong place from Facebook’s preview? If you also have a link a post on Facebook where that’s been shared so we can see the problem there, that would be great as well.

Dear Kokkieh, the URL of the post I wanted to link to is simply that of the top page: https://hailhaiku.wordpress.com/ as the post is currently still at the top,
but what FB offered through their autogenerated photo-bearing link when I shared to another blog was a link to a post called ‘and yet’ from 2009! https://hailhaiku.wordpress.com/2009/05/25/and-yet/?fbclid=IwAR2vAeY2eDB_1_9avgGWTQ6kGZOwDsKE23q-3lPdSVAQFVrMHRysZWyoOzU
It was not on my own blog that things went wrong, but when I shared to a group blog (the second link given here). Sorry I probably didn’t explain it well. Can you see what has happened for the top page link to be auto-changed into a link to a post from 2009?!
Thanks again for any guidance or help you can give. -
Okay, so the post is https://hailhaiku.wordpress.com/2020/03/15/genjuan-international-haibun-contest-2020-results/, correct?
Did you manually share that link on Facebook, share it using the Facebook button on the post, or was it shared via our auto-share feature, Publicize?
Do you have a link to the Facebook post linking to the wrong blog post? If you look at the Facebook post, right-click the timestamp, and select Copy Link Location. Paste that link here for me.
Looking at the preview Facebook generates when I run that post through their debugger at https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/?q=https%3A%2F%2Fhailhaiku.wordpress.com%2F2020%2F03%2F15%2Fgenjuan-international-haibun-contest-2020-results%2F, I don’t see it linking to the wrong post there.
