Facebook share counter broken

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,
This is a fairly trivial problem, has happened before and usually rights itself.

The Facebook share counter has not registered anything for my past three posts. I wonder if there is some glitch. I’m aware it’s not necessarily an accurate measure, but thought I’d share it.

Many thanks for your help and a happy holiday to all.

    With best wishes from Mike

The share counter on your blog posts indicates only those who clicked into your post and then clicked the share button there. It does not indicate any sharing that was done anywhere else. As it is Boxing Day I don’t think any lack of shares recorded on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and today is odd.

It dates back to Sunday and is certainly out of the ordinary – there is always activity on the counter.

But as I say, it’s not of vital importance but worth noting. And in the past it has reset as if by magic.

    Hi Mike,

So just to confirm, as an example your most recent post:

    2014 moments #4

has been shared a least once on Facebook, correct? It should be showing a count of that and I can verify that for me at least it is not showing anything.

Is that the case? Do you happen to have a Facebook page on which this was shared so I can verify it?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi there,
Thanks for getting back to me.

I haven’t shared recent posts (such as the one you mentioned) as direct links on Facebook, so I’m not surprised the counter is blank.

Also, this post http://mikeosbornphoto.com/2014/12/21/architects-artchitecture/ was certainly shared. It hadn’t been showing anything but now has two on the counter – a good sign.

To be honest I’m not sure how this works and was under the impression there was an element of randomness to it, and the counter wasn’t always an accurate reflection of any sharing activity that’s been going on.

Any guidance would be appreciated, otherwise I sense all is as it should be…

    Hi Mike,

When all is working correctly there shouldn’t be that much of an element of randomness actually. If a post gets shared on Facebook (or Twitter, or LinkedIn, etc) then you SHOULD get an incrementally higher number for that network. I say should because we are at the mercy of each network reporting those correct numbers back to us for each individual post, so if they are either down or not responding quickly then the count will be either off or won’t display.

So that’s why sometimes we have to do some digging on an article which we know has been shared but isn’t displaying those shares. That way we can dig in and see where the errors are coming from — us or them!

If to the best of your knowledge everything is working right now, great news! But if you run across a post which you’re quite sure has been shared say 5 times but is showing none or only say 2 times, then we would generally be interested in knowing that.

    Hi amightywp,
Many thanks for this and all seemed fine – but according to recent blog posts, the Facebook counter has stopped functioning altogether.

This one had some Facebook action but is at zero:

    Blooming surprise

Any chance to investigate this would be much appreciated – it gives the impression that I have no relationship with FB and there’s no longer a link between posts and reaction to posts over there.

    With best wishes,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

We have been recently working on some issues with Facebook shares. There have been some problems since we switched over to all https on our sites. Some of our users have been able to get some of their FB shares to appear by changing the button type under Settings >> Sharing, however we fully admit that right now that’s a temporary fix. We’re working with Facebook’s developers to try and come up with a more complete resolution to the problem.

Sorry that I don’t have better news.

Many thanks for getting back to me. I’ll try the temporary fix and failing that will bear with you while it’s investigated.

    With best wishes from Mike
