Facebook shares not showing on wordpress posts

    Hello, We noticed recently that all of our facebook shares disappeared and are now reset to “0”. We tried using the Facebook sharing debugger tool to scrape the post. Under the canonical URL, it actually shows the true number of likes. But it didn’t make a difference with updating the number of shares on our posts. Cannot figure this out. Thanks for your help!

    Hi there,

    Your site is not hosted on WordPress.com, but using the open source WordPress software found on WordPress.org. We have no control over how the sharing buttons on your site work, as those are not provided by us.

    Please contact support for the plugin you’re using to add those buttons directly. However, this is most likely related to Facebook’s old API which they retired last week, and which means they no longer provide sharing counts for any unofficial buttons added to site via third-party plugins.

    The custom Facebook button on WordPress.com sites have similarly stopped showing a share count, and that now only displays if you use the official buttons.

    Hi @vinchough, your issue may actually be that Facebook stopped supporting share counts on custom icons. Using the default sharing buttons will likely fix it.

    If you need more help, since this is a different issue from the one in the original post, in that your site is hosted here, could you start a new topic here?

    Where do I get the official FB share buttons? Mine was gone as well.

    Info on setting up share buttons can be found here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/sharing/

    Keep in mind that because FB has stopped supporting it, the buttons will no longer show the total number of shares from anywhere and will only show the number of times something was shared from the WordPress.com end of things.
