    Hello
Is there any update regarding this please?

    Hi Zeena,

Thanks for bringing this to our attention! Just to confirm an example with you, currently, I see 0 Facebook Shares here:

    http://zeenamoolla.wordpress.com/2014/10/29/7-types-of-mum-to-avoid-on-maternity-leave/

However, I suspect that number was previously in the 700’s based on what I find when I run that same post through the Facebook debugger:

    https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object/

Does that sound close to the correct value to you? I just want to make sure I have a good example of this issue. We’re looking into why it might be occurring!

    Hi Jeremey
Thanks for getting back to me.
I can’t see anything in that second link you sent – but yes, that’s completely correct! That particular post reads 0 now but was around 735. They are all drastically down.
Do you know when this might be resolved?
    Thanks again

    Hi Jeremey,

Is there any update regarding this?

    Many thanks

  • @zeena2001
Jeremey will post back here once he has more information. You don’t need to keep posting here asking for updates – staff always come back to check on existing threads they’ve answered until they’re sure you’re happy. I’ve not once seen them abandon a thread, so just relax till you hear from him again :)

I have the same problem. This post https://cronicasdoenes.wordpress.com/2015/02/18/politicagem-queima-mais-do-que-o-fogo/ used to show 106 shares a few days ago, now shows 63. And this https://cronicasdoenes.wordpress.com/2015/01/01/ano-novo-vida-nova/ used to show 30 shares and now 22. Thanks for your help.

    Hi Kokkieh,

Thanks for your response and kind reassurance – much appreciated.

I have potential work from the blog, specifically this week, so hope you can understand why I have twice asked for an update. Without an idea of timescale (of when members might next get a response, even), it’s hard not to feel a little in the dark. But Jeremey has been most helpful and, as you say, I’m sure he’ll get back soon. If you have any more information about when a Happiness Engineer will be in touch again, that would be great? But if not, don’t worry, I’ll just cross my fingers that I hear back soon.

    Thanks again, Kokkieh.
    Zeena

  • I can’t tell you when, but most of the Happiness Engineers are based in the US and usually come online when it’s late afternoon in Africa and Europe. If it’s an issue he has to take up with the developers it can also take longer, as they don’t work weekends as far as I know. That’s the nature of support forums in general, I’m afraid, so best to just be patient.

Ok, thanks Kokkieh – will hope to hear this afternoon and hopefully, this problem will be rectified shortly. I’ll sit patiently and keep my fingers crossed in the meantime!
Many thanks again. You have been very helpful.

  • You’re welcome :)

    Hi @zeena2001,

Thanks so much for confirming! We’re digging into the issue to make sure we can get this resolved as soon as possible. However, I don’t have a timeline for you unfortunately. I will keep this thread updated as soon as I hear more though!

@franciscoenes – It looks like this definitely might be the issue. Thanks for providing another example! I’ll update this thread as soon as I have more information.

    Hi all,

I just wanted to follow-up on this issue. Unfortunately, this appears to be an issue on the Facebook side and not something that we can easily fix. At the moment, we don’t have a solution in place that will fix this issue. I apologize!

    Hi Jeremey

    Thanks for the update.

So, is this a bug? I thought it was likely to be on the Facebook side as you say, as nothing else seems to be affected – can WordPress members do anything themselves to look into it? A friend has offered to look at it for me – he’s a web developer – but will this cause further problems? And are Facebook contactable regarding this?

If you could let me know as much as possible, it would be much appreciated. I want to do all I can to get this sorted so the more information I have, the more useful.

    Many thanks Jeremey,
    Zeena

    Hi Zeena,

Just a note that this actually should be working again. Can you change your button style to anything but the official buttons here?

    https://zeenamoolla.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=sharing

To explain a bit more, when we switched from HTTP to HTTPS URLs for .wordpress.com sites, we encountered an issue where all Facebook shares were lost because they were associated with the HTTP URL. As a “fix”, we grabbed both of the share values (from HTTP and HTTPS URLs) and summed the totals. That behavior was temporarily removed (when you noticed the issue) but is now back for the moment (with any button style except “official”).

Ideally, when Facebook encounters a redirect (HTTP redirects to HTTPS), they would migrate the sharing counts to the HTTPS URL. That mechanism is currently not in place.

    Hi Jeremey

Thank you so much for this – really grateful for all your effort.

Going forward, does this mean new posts, as of now, shared via Facebook will reflect the right number of shares? Or will the missing mechanism you mentioned impact on this? Also, will new Facebook shares for old blog posts be added to existing Facebook shares and accurately reflected in quantity of the Facebook share button?

And – final question! – will the mechanism currently not in place be addressed? I presume at some point WP members will have to have the official buttons and if this problem happens again, would be good to know how to rectify it myself without badgering Support..

Thank you again, Jeremey – is very appreciated.

Going forward, does this mean new posts, as of now, shared via Facebook will reflect the right number of shares?

Yes! All future shares should be counted towards the HTTPS version of your URL. So, that means share numbers will be recorded correctly without any extra magic since your site will be HTTPS and shares will be recorded under the HTTPS URL.

Also, will new Facebook shares for old blog posts be added to existing Facebook shares and accurately reflected in quantity of the Facebook share button?

Yes, as of right now, shares for HTTP URLs should be added to the count and displayed correctly on your site provided you’re not using the Official Button style.

And – final question! – will the mechanism currently not in place be addressed? I presume at some point WP members will have to have the official buttons and if this problem happens again, would be good to know how to rectify it myself without badgering Support..

Unfortunately, due to the way the official buttons are loaded into the page, we’re limited in what we can do to get the share counts corrected in this button style. For example, if you enter your URL in the generator on this page:

    https://developers.facebook.com/docs/plugins/share-button

You’ll see that the HTTPS version of your URL pulls back 0 shares:

    http://d.pr/i/1if0R

As mentioned previously, this would be something Facebook would need to address when they encounter a redirect (migrate shares to HTTPS URL when HTTP is redirected).

    Hi Jeremey,

Haven’t had a feedback questionnaire thing – shall I just use the original one that came through by mistake?

    Cheers again Jeremey,

    Hi Jeremeyl,
Since yesterday I’m having the same problem (again).
    Many thanks.
