Facebook Shares Only Display Image After Re-Saving
-
When I share Blog posts, Facebook never sees the image unless I delete it as a featured image and re-add it, then update the blog post. Every other webpage in the world seems to share just fine but WordPress support keeps trying to say it’s a ‘known issue’. I can find no references to this issue being a problem for anyone online really, at least not at a 100% failure rate. Customer support has been pretty poor so far, they pointed to a single post with no answers as a ‘reason’ for the issue.
WP.com: Yes
Jetpack: No
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Something is wrong with WP when you first upload the file. I was able to delete the photo, then re-add the same one and update the post. Then shares will work with images. WP support claims Facebook is the problem and that they are waiting for them. I have not had this problem with any site I know isn’t on WordPress.

Hi there,
Thank you for reaching out. I’ve taken a look at your previous support requests and it seems that the issue you’re experiencing isn’t unique to your site.
Here’s what’s happening: When you share a post on Facebook, Facebook scans the page for specific meta tags, known as Open Graph meta tags, to create a preview of the post. This preview typically includes an image, title, and description.
On WordPress.com, Jetpack generates these Open Graph meta tags for you automatically. To see what Facebook sees when it scans your posts, you can use the Facebook Debugger tool by entering one of your post URLs.

Unfortunately, once this data is published on our end, we don’t have control over how Facebook scans or interprets it. From what we’ve gathered, this seems to be an intermittent issue that Facebook has been aware of for several months, as indicated by reports on their Meta Developers site. This aligns with the information we shared with you during our recent live chat.
“It’s not affecting everyone, but it is affecting a big chunk of people and Facebook did confirm it was an issue on their end (this has happened before, most recently last fall).”
WordPress.com live chat, February 2, 2024We genuinely wish there were more we could do to resolve this for you, but ultimately, it’s an issue that Facebook needs to address on their end.
I hope this provides some clarity. If you have any further questions or need assistance with anything else, please don’t hesitate to let us know. We’re here to help.

Pointing to a question that’s gone unanswered and unacknowledged by Facebook in their forums by their staff isn’t really an ‘acknowledgment’ of a problem. You’re just kinda pointing at a few people having issues without context, ticket numbers, or anything to actually show there’s a systemic problem within Facebook.
It actually seems like there’s a problem with Jetpack.
One of your reps even referenced that they saw an error in the formatting when they ran the tool on a specific image, though that’s one of the people who just stopped talking when I continued to press on this issue.
Since it’s just a few users on the forum link, and WordPress hosts 810 million websites, it’s a fair guess that these folks are just more WordPress users having WordPress problems.
If I edit the post after it’s gone live. Delete the image and remove it from my media store. Then re-upload the exact same image. This fixes the image share and things look fine on Facebook. That doesn’t sound like a Facebook problem to me since nothing changes but the image on WordPress.
I told this to a rep and it was ignored.
There’s a problem with Jetpack that WordPress seems reluctant, or even adamant not to acknowledge.

I have kind a the same problem on 2 different sites, sometime the image initialy shows up but in most cases not, and the image disappears from old shares. If I try to share the direct link of the featured image on Facebook I in most cases get the same “429 Too Many Request”. It sounds like there are too many requests for images in genreal from Facebook.com to napjeeper5.files.wordpress.com, so it rejects the request?
