Facebook sharing
-
People following via updates on facebook do not have the option of sharing the content I post. If I manually post a link to a blog post, others have no problem sharing it. The feature that automatically generates a post on facebook (i.e. “Sean McCann published an article on WordPress”) cannot be shared. Is there any way to resolve this?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Sean,
Are you referring to sharing the post from inside the Facebook interface (using the “Share” button)? If so, it looks like this is working correctly on my side. You can see an example of a post that was publicized here:
The “Share” function is working correctly in that instance. Can you let me know if this is what you’re referring to or if I’m misunderstanding your question?
-
Yes, it is the share function in facebook. Posts that I share via putting the URL in a facebook update share fine, it is the auto-posted content that cannot be shared. I am wondering what the difference is between these two types of posts.
-
There is a slight difference in the way they appear, but the functionality should be the same. The example that I provided was auto-posted to Facebook and still has the “Share” functionality. Can you try publicizing (auto-sharing) your next post so I can take a look?
-
Sure, if you go to my facebook profile, you can see 2 examples of posts that were both auto shared and manually shared. The address is here: https://www.facebook.com/smccann27
the ones that are auto shared are marked up as: “Sean McCann published an article on WordPress”. -
You should find, just clicking the share button that you cannot share the auto-shared content.

Hey Sean!
Here’s what happens when I click the “Share” button on your most recent Facebook post:
Just a note, I wasn’t able to find any articles with the text “Sean McCann published an article on WordPress” in April. Where those published in a previous month? If so, could you point me to the date or title of the post so I can take a look?
-
Here is one (auto shared) where sharing doesn’t work: https://www.facebook.com/smccann27/activity/10152393162147905?stream_ref=10&og_perm_src=OPEN_GRAPH_SINGLE_STORY
and here is one (manually shared) where it does: https://www.facebook.com/smccann27/posts/10152393265097905?stream_ref=10

Hey Sean,
Can you let me know the title of the post that first URL (the Open Graph one) comes from? The link you provided isn’t linking anywhere on your Facebook page so I can’t narrow down the post to help troubleshoot. Please provide me the date and the title of the post that is currently shared on Facebook.
-
It is titled “Practicing for wildlife with dogs!” and was shared yesterday.
Thanks for looking into this! -
-
Yes, that is the one I shared by pasting in the URL. It is the other one, the one that says “Sean McCann posted on WordPress” that has the problem.
-
-
Well, that is definitely possible! I checked into it, and it seems this is only shared with my friends. I changed it manually, and this seems to clear it up! I am not sure if this will change it in future posts, but at least I know what is going on. Thanks so much for taking the time to investigate this!
-
Hey Sean,
To clear this up for the future, I believe you’ll just need to navigate to this page when logged into your Facebook account:
https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=applications
On that page, find WordPress. Click “Edit” and change the Visibility of App to Public.
Let me know if that fixes the issue moving forward!

I changed the setting in Facebook now, so that should clear it up for good. Thanks again!
