Facebook sharing old gravatar image even after using facebook debugger and clear
-
I have seen topics on the post of facebook sharing the wrong image (or an old gravatar image), but it does not address my problem. I have cleared cache, disconnected them, and gone to the facebook debugger: https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object/
When I enter the page to refrech facebook cache, it STILL grabs the old gravatar image (which i have deleted in ANY place on my wordpress or posts ANYWHERE). How do i get it to grab the new gravatar image when sharing?Under “Based on the raw tags, we constructed the following Open Graph properties” in facebook debugger, it displays the CORRECT image (my current gravatar), but then below under “When shared, this is what will be included” it displays the old image still. I have waited two weeks hoping maybe its just cache in facebook but no luck. Spent hours trying to figure out. Please help! and thank you!!!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

We have no control over the images that Facebook or any other social networks chooses to display or when they choose to flush their image caches. We really only send them the URL of the post, and they hunt through that for the excerpt and images to include.

Sometimes these help and sometimes they don’t

P.S. Have you tried deleting all images except the one you want to display from your gravatar profile page? http://en.gravatar.com/erinumberg

UPDATE: i have also tried adding a featured image to the post (just to see if fb would grab that instead of old deleted gravatar image as wordpress tutorial said they “suggest” featured image first when sharing a post) but that also did not resolve issue. Facebook still grabs the gravatar I deleted weeks ago. :/ (And I almost dont want to share posts anymore because the huge image of my face is so obnoxious).
-
Thanks timethief for the response. Yes, I have tried that as well. I let it sit for a full week with only a SINGLE image (the one i wanted displayed) and had the facebook debugger “refetch” data, but still no luck.
This was the most recent post I shared on facebook: https://erinumberg.wordpress.com/2015/02/26/the-war-on-drugs-and-mental-illness-in-the-criminal-justice-system/
And it appears like this on facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/erin.umberg (you can see the big image that is clearly not my current gravatar) -
I’m sorry I was unable to help you resolve this. I tagged this thread for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it.

Hi @erinumberg,
This is definitely odd. For some reason, Facebook is recognizing the correct image in the debugger (og:image), but showing the incorrect one right after that. Can you try uploading a new Blavatar in JPEG format that is at least 200x200px? I’m wondering if the current Blavatar is too small.
-
Hi @jeremyduvall. Yes, I double checked and the JPEG was already at 1300x1300px (when uploaded). I just uploaded again in JPEG (1300×1300) to be sure.
It’s kind of crippling my ability to share any blog posts at this point because I am essentially sharing a huge picture of my face any time I want to share.
Thanks for your time and help. -
Thanks for checking back! I’m still not sure why Facebook is displaying this image. All signs point to it showing your current Blavatar. I’m still doing some investigating. I’ll follow up as soon as I know more.
For now, the main solution would be to set a featured image for each blog post:
That should override the current image being shared.
-
Hi @jeremeyduvall, I also tried that. (After reading that wordpress sends facebook the “featured image” as first choice image for facebook to grab over a gravatar). FB still grabbed the OLD/DELETED gravatar after I set a featured image to a post and tried sharing it.

I set it on this one originally: https://erinumberg.wordpress.com/2015/02/26/the-war-on-drugs-and-mental-illness-in-the-criminal-justice-system/
But after I shared it and saw that fb still grabbed old gravatar I deleted the featured image bc adding it to the post warped some of the html code of the post (given the post contains code interlinking references, adding “featured image” through the sidebar and not manually entering the code defaulted to a mess).Just to double check…. I added a featured image on this post just now: https://erinumberg.wordpress.com/2015/02/23/this-day-in-baseball-history/
(Code doesn’t seem to have featured image though).
When I shared to facebook, the deleted gravatar still populated. :/ -
When you update an image on a URL that you’ve already tried to share on Facebook, you’ll likely need to run the URL through the Facebook debugger here:
https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/og/object/
When I did that, Facebook began pulling the correct image:
Unfortunately, the non-featured image posts are still getting posted with the wrong image. I’ll let you know as soon as I have more information as to why!

Hey Erin,
This is a bit of a tricky one. Somehow, Facebook cached the wrong image at the right URL. The URL of the correct image is as follows:
https://secure.gravatar.com/blavatar/cbb0a7de0f989d401d099f3db5d252eb?s=200
I’m not sure why, but somewhere along the way, Facebook associated that URL with your previous image. Fetching new information from the debugger doesn’t re-fetch images so that’s why we’re seeing the wrong image pop up.
To fix this, can you re-upload the Blavatar to your site?
http://en.support.wordpress.com/avatars/blavatars/
This should cause Facebook to see a new URL with the correct image.
I don’t think this is the result of any error on your part. We suspect it might be a weird error from Facebook.

Hi Jeremey,
I went to : https://erinumberg.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-general.php
And uploaded a new blavatar (making sure it’s bigger than 200×200). I submitted to the fb debugger.
When I share, it is still grabbing the deleted gravatar from several weeks ago. Should I give it an hour and try again?
Thanks again for taking so much time to troubleshoot this for me!

Hey Erin,
The URL for the Blavatar appears to be the same when I run it through the Facebook debugger:
https://secure.gravatar.com/blavatar/cbb0a7de0f989d401d099f3db5d252eb?s=200
I don’t believe that’s going to fix the issue because the URL of the og:image won’t change (so Facebook still sees it as the old image). Did you happen to upload the same photo (just uploaded it a second time)? Could you try uploading a completely different photo? I’m sorry for the hassle here. We just need to make Facebook forget about this old photo, which requires changing the URL.
-
Hi there, Just uploaded a totally different photo/filename/etc. I’ll try debugging it in 10 minutes to see if that does the trick. This is so strange….
Thanks again,
Erin -
Hey Erin!
It looks like you changed your Gravatar rather than your Blavatar (your blog’s avatar). You can change the latter on the page here (top right-hand corner):
https://erinumberg.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-general.php
You can change your Gravatar back to the photo of you. That shouldn’t affect the Facebook issue!
-
Ooops…wanted to change both the gravatar and blavatar to totally different pics so it would be clear to me where each one came in.
(Gravatar is now a sun, Blavatar is now a circular symbol image).
Funny…after doing that, it is now pulling the blavatar I originally wanted (pic of me that I deleted yesterday and replaced with circle symbol). This is really strange.
I debugged, it now grabs the photo I was originally trying to get facebook to grab, but still not the current blavatar.
