Facebook sharing old gravatar image even after using facebook debugger and clear
-
I think we’re on the verge of success here! When I scrap your post titled “Charging inmates exorbitant rates for phone calls could be costing the state more money in the long run…”, this is what I’m seeing:
It looks like Facebook is seeing the correct image at the Gravatar URL. I’m not 100% sure why the new image isn’t appearing (my initial hunch was size issue maybe?).
Can you switch both your Gravatar and Blavatar back to normal now?
-
Okay, changed both the sun image and the circle symbol back to the photo of me (that is in the screen shot you sent)…
Curious though…why would facebook not scrape the data for the current image (circle symbol)? Iow, will this happen every time I try to change my blavatar?
Thank you for all the time you are taking! -

I’m not entirely sure to be honest! I expected Facebook to pull up the circle symbol when I scraped it so I’m not really sure why it didn’t. I’m hoping this is a one time fluke, and this issue won’t resurface again.
I just scraped the following URLs:
The correct image came back each time. Can you confirm on your side as well?

Awww, I feel like I’m losing my mind….. it STILL pulls the way old close-up picture of face (deleted weeks ago) for this post:
https://erinumberg.wordpress.com/2015/03/04/erin-umberg-5/And this is the one post I’m trying to share on various message boards. I re-scraped and cleared cache. The prior two links you scraped work fine now, but I think it’s because each of those have a featured image (if they didn’t have featured image, wonder if they too would grab the way old picture of me).

Sorry, to clarify, facebook appears to be “grabbing” the correct image (<meta property=”og:image” content=”https://secure.gravatar.com/blavatar/cbb0a7de0f989d401d099f3db5d252eb?s=200″>)
but displaying in the share box an image that is no longer at that url.For another twist, this post (similar to above in that it has no featured image) DOES associate the same grabbed url with the correct image in the share box: https://erinumberg.wordpress.com/2015/02/10/california-pledges-changes-in-protecting-underground-water/
Which makes me wonder….could something in the code for the War on Drugs post be interfering with facebook debugger, preventing it from debugging? I know that I included href tags for references in that post…. Is that a possibility? Seems strange still. I really just want to be able to share the War on Drugs post without feeling self-conscious about the deleted face pic always being blasted right next to it. :/
-
Actually, https://erinumberg.wordpress.com/2015/02/17/patent-law-and-supplements/ also shows old image when shared as well (and that one even has the extra featured image).
I did a test post with exact same code as War on Drugs post and it’s not the code that is preventing FB from grabbing the correct image. I also noticed that Linkedin associates the old/deleted gravatar image. Is there a “debugger” for linkedin as well or is this just weird that all the other social media share sites are picking up that deleted wordpress gravatar/blavatar?
Thank you again! I’d be totally pulling my hair out if I were trying to figure this out on my own!

Let’s take a quick step back to this post:
That post is sharing correctly for me on Facebook without a featured image as shown here:
Can you try the following?
1. Log out of Facebook
2. Clear your browser’s cache:
3. Log back into Facebook and try to share it?
The correct image is also getting pulled up on LinkedIn as shown here:
I’m hoping this might be a browser-related caching issue or one that’s cleared by logging in and out of your social media accounts.

Hi there, I cleared cache/cookies/browsing history (since beginning of time) for all browsers on my mac—chrome and safari. I de-linked all facebook/linkedin acounts from my wordpress account. Then shut down and restarted computer. Everything logged out.
But for this one post (the one I’m actually trying to share…grrrrr):
https://erinumberg.wordpress.com/2015/03/04/erin-umberg-5/
it refuses to grab the right image still. I then had my friend log into her facebook on my computer and sharing on her facebook also grabbed the old/deleted gravatar. (Just for that one post…which annoyingly is THE post I am trying to fix).
I’m not sure how to attach a screen shot to this thread…would that be helpful?
Is there anywhere else in my computer that would make facebook grab the deleted image for only that post….it must be on my computer if it works for your computer correctly, right?
Thank you again for all the trouble shooting. I realize at this point, it might make sense to just set a featured image instead….but I kind of want to get to the bottom of this for perplexity sake. -
That is definitely weird/frustrating! For whatever reason, it is pulling the correct image on my side. Here’s what I see when I try to share the post:
Even the debugger is working correctly:
I’m grabbing at straws a bit, but could you try an incognito window in Chrome (File -> New Incognito Window)? Also, what do you see under the debugger when you run the post URL?
-
No dice with the Incognito window.
I also went to the library on campus and used a computer I have never logged in with wordpress/facebook and tried to share the post. It came up with the old gravatar pic. (There’s NO way it could have been old cache then right?) I have also tried sharing it just by posting the link into my fb (not direct share from wordpress) AND on a computer I have never used before and it still doesn’t work. This is beyond stranger…Here’s what I see under the debugger (the URL share pic shows deleted gravatar):
[code removed] -
The incorrect image is now showing for me as well. I’m not sure how/why I was getting the correct image for a short period of time. I’m now seeing the incorrect one. It looks like the same issue – Facebook has the wrong image cached at the right URL. Sadly, I don’t believe there’s anything else we can try that will force Facebook to fetch a new image. Hopefully, Facebook will fetch the image again and pull the correct on. In the meantime, my best suggestion would be to set a featured image for the post. I’m sorry I couldn’t be more help here!
