Facebook style "Link Preview"

Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+ have this useful feature called “Link Preview”:
When you paste a URL into a post, Facebook’s server automatically grabs the title and description from the linked website and lets you select a thumbnail image from those available on the linked site.
This saves so much time that you would otherwise spend finding, copying, pasting, resizing and uploading an image for your post.
I desperately want to do this in my WordPress.com blog. Any ideas out there to make it happen? Do I need to switch our blog over to another service (WordPress.org) to get this functionality? Anyone out there who can help, please respond asap. Thanks!

Hi there. Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+ are social networking platforms where you share single links at a time, which is why they show the previews.
WordPress is a blogging platform and works completely differently. Here links are inserted in context (if you’re following best practices) as part of a larger article and either connected to anchor text or to an image. The context in which you add the link should make it clear what’s to be expected if people click the link, in which case a preview not necessary. A preview is also impractical if a link occurs within a block of text. http://en.support.wordpress.com/links/
If you’re looking for a quick and easy way to insert images into posts without having to search the entire web for them I would recommend the Zemanta browser extension. It suggests images based on the words in your text, but you can use it to search for specific images as well. It also suggest posts on other websites/blogs that are related to yours and you can insert them with or without a thumbnail image with a single click. We actually swapped our blog over to WordPress.org because I discovered Embedly, which has something called “cards” that are exactly what we are looking for. Too bad WordPress.com doesn’t have the same ability.
