facebook thumbnail share and meta descriptions

  Hi,
  I am trying to share my blog over facebook and I keep getting a blank thumbnail with the description ‘no title’. I have tried the facebook debugger and get the message that ‘The ‘og:type’ property is required, but not present.’
  How do I provide the required meta descriptions without a plugin? I am not sure how to access the theme’s functions.php file. It doesn’t work via Dashboard-Appearance-Editor or when I try to access it via the browser.

  Help will greatly be appreciated. I realise this question has already been posted a lot but I cant seem to get it right on my .com website.
