Facebook/Twitter Posts no longer display the shortcode links.

    When I make a new post. I normally save the draft. When I do that, the shortcode automatically appears in the Publicize section of the post. It now has stopped. Also I will add it manually when I click get shortcode. when it publishes, Facebook will have the long ugly link in the body of the post.

    Twitter now posts the short code, the youtube link (if one) and the long ugly link. I have to manually edit each page. Its a pain. The short links still work and direct to the correct posts. They are just not posting correctly. Thanks in advance for the help.

  • Hi there. I’m afraid you’re in the wrong forum. This support forum is only for free WordPress.com blogs. You appear to have a self-hosted WordPress.ORG install. WordPress.com and WordPress.org are completely separate and different: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

    Please visit the WordPress.org support forum for assistance as we won’t be able to help you here: http://wordpress.org/support/ If you don’t already have a username on that forum, click the register button in the upper right corner so you can post in that forum.

    I am a wordpress.com user and I have the same issue and it’s driving me insane. I used to have the shortlinks which were great for grabbing on twitter and reusing when I needed to repost the link now I have to come all the way back into the article and grab it via the buttons at the bottom or by going into edit the post.

    Is there a way I can go back to how it used to be please?

    I’ve tagged this for staff to follow up. Please be patient while waiting for their response.

    Hi there,

    Publicize was changed to use the full link to the post instead of the shortlink. That full link was added to posts publicized on Facebook, after we received quite a bit of feedback about posts that were publicized to Facebook not having a clear link back to the blog. The full link is also used on Twitter to make your site’s address more visible there — Twitter now counts the length of the shortlink and the full link the same, so there’s no need to use a shortlink to save characters there anymore.

    @jeremy8bitgeek — You mentioned that Twitter is showing multiple links, which shouldn’t happen. Can you share a link to a post where that happened? I’ll take a look.

    @kokkieh — The Jetpack plugin includes the same Publicize feature available on WordPress.com, so if someone is having trouble with that staff can help with it here or directly through Jetpack support. If you’re ever unsure of whether someone with a self-hosted site is having an issue that’s related to WordPress.com/Jetpack, feel free to add the modlook tag and we can sort it out. :)

    Usually I refer .org users to the Jetpack forum on WP.org, and to Jetpack support itself, but apparently I didn’t think of it this time. Good to know you can also help with it here. I’ll remember that in future.

    @rachelmcr

    Well it’s posting the links in the post as well as the website links. You can see all the posts are doing it.

    Hi jeremy8bitgeek,

    Thank you for that link to your Twitter page. I’m checking with my team about those YouTube links, to find out more about why those are appearing in your tweets.

    I also see you manually added the wp.me shortlinks to some of your publicized tweets. When you do that, it’s in addition to the full link to your post that’s automatically added to the end of the publicized tweet — you can leave that out and your tweet will just have the regular, full link to the post. Is there a reason why you prefer that shortlink to the full post link?

    It looks a lot cleaner. It would be nice to have an option for people to choose the long vs the short links. why have a wp.me and not be able to use it when you publish within wordpress. It makes me have to go and edit both twitter and FB posts.

    Thanks for that explanation. There aren’t any plans at the moment to switch back to using the shortlink when publicizing your posts with the Publicize feature, so if you prefer how that shortlink looks your best bet is to manually share your posts with that link on Twitter and Facebook.
