Failed to load content css

  • Unknown's avatar

    1) when I open a post to edit (draft or published post) I get the error message: Failed to load content css: //s1.wp.com/wp-includes/css/dashicons.css?v=20150727
    2) when I click to add media, I do not see the image in my Gallery, but I see the file name of the images.
    3) In edit mode, the buttons in the Visual bar are squashed little boxes (no image/clipart ?), except for the button + Add and Paragraph. All other buttons are not viewable.

Currently using FireFox on a Windows 10 laptop.

Any advice? Should I post this issue under a new thread in this forum? I think this original viewing problem may now be closed (thought all my problems were resolved with FireFox vs Chrome or Edge)
Note: I had a previous thread, but thought all my issues were resolved when I used FireFox. While that did resolve issues with view my wordpress blog, it didn’t resolve issues with editing. Thus, I’ve opened up this new thread (prior thread was closed) Here is a link to previous posts on related issues:

When searching the forums for this error “Failed to load content css” I do see a number of recent problems. But the suggested links all come back saying page not found when I try to click. I can’t tell if these similar problems have been resolved or not, but I’m inclined to think this problem is not just my laptop, nor browser. Makes me wonder if it could be related to a fairly recent release update to Windows 10. Either way, I can’t edit/write posts on my blog and can’t figure out what I need to do to resolve the problem. Help definitely needed.

Out of interest, do you get the same problems when using the wp-admin dashboard?

When using the admin url view the dashboard is so messed up I just get a bunch of hyperlinks all on the left column (formatting is missing). When I click view post, I don’t see anything different. Nor for clicking any other option using Chrome.

Doesn’t get much better using FireFox, but slightly. Still see a weird menu that shows hyperlinks on left column. I did get a pop up box for a new blog post. I wasn’t able to publish it, even though there is a publish button. It looks like I may have been able to save it to draft, but I wasn’t yet able to call it back up to see if I could edit it.

Something is a much in wordpress land.

Still having problems and no luck with any solution recommended. The error message Failed to load content css: //s1.wp.com/wp-includes/css/dashicons.css?v=20150727 continues to happen regardless of which browser I use, or which user logs in as admin to my blog.

    Any recommendations?

As you say you have problems with all browsers and both dashboards I think it’s time to call for staff assistance (I’ve now added the modlook tag) to see if anyone can pinpoint the reason for the error message.

How do I call for staff assistance ? Modlook tag ? Do I need to do anything or did you initiate such request for staff assistance?

BTW – ERR_BAD_SSL_CLIENT_AUTH_CERT is reported when I use the developers tool of Firefox.

Help by an expert would definitely be appreciated.

Yes adding the word modlook to the tag box on the right ensures that a member of staff replies here.

I think I may have figured out my problem and fixed it. The clue about the SSL led me to a post on the forum about ESET settings and after making those changes I was able to access my blog, view icons, edit drafts, write new posts and not get the errors/problems viewing I had previously. I’ll contact the ESET team today to try to find out what happened. I’ve used ESET for years (best security SW and team ever) and suspect something changed with a recent windows 10 update.

Looks like I’m back in the saddle again

Here is a link to my blog where I did share info on the solution: https://quiltshopgal2.wordpress.com/2018/05/15/wordpress-problems/

  • Good sleuthing, @quiltshopgirl ! Do you mind sharing what setting you changed, and perhaps a link to the forum post you found? It sounds like ESET was blocking something and you unblocked that, but I just want to be sure all is well on our end, too.

  • I did find this, by the way, which doesn’t really provide a full answer but does give some clues.

It sounds like maybe ESET may be blocking the newer SSL protocols we use here, and therefore blocking any content that came from servers that use them.

    @darlenesimmons
are you using ESET as well? It does sound a bit like your system could be blocking some resources as well.
