Failing to import xml file from Blogger

No error messages, says it was completed but nothing uploaded?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’ve tagged this for Staff assistance. Please be patient while they get back to you.

  • Hi there,

I downloaded the file that you’d tried to upload, and it imported 19 posts for me. Is that the content you’re looking for, or was there more?

Can you please try importing the file again, and make sure you use the Blogger importer, here:

    https://marksnape.wordpress.com/wp-admin/admin.php?import=blogger

Let me know if it still won’t work correctly.

    Hello,

Yes that’s right 19 posts! Oddly I have uploaded it before without any issues, and then deleted posts, (just testing a few things before I commit etc). I was thinking this may have been the issue and that maybe just renaming the xml file might help. I’ll give it another go, thanks.

  • Ah, okay. When you delete posts they go to the Trash folder but aren’t deleted completely, which means the importer still sees those posts on your site and won’t import them again.

You’ll need to completely delete those posts from trash, so they’re not on your site at all any more. Then the new import should work. You can empty the trash on this page:

    https://marksnape.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_status=trash&post_type=post

    Thanks @kokkieh @marksnape – learned something new today. :)

Great stuff, all uploaded. Quite a bit of tweaking to do, (images are lacking the spaces between text)

Do I need to subscribe to a plan to enable the videos to upload as all have been posted ‘//www.youtube.com/get_player’

    Thanks again

  • @marksnape

I’m afraid that when importing from a different platform some formatting can get messed up, yes. I hope it’s not too much editing.

To upload videos to the media library you will need the Premium plan at least, yes. Without Premium it’s only possible to embed videos from other services like Youtube or Vimeo.

Thanks again, embedding if fine thanks…

I noted (overnight?) some of my posts were no longer in date order? And so after a bit of research found out about the option (‘Stick to front page option’) although I could not actually find it! However after a little while of trying to resolve the issue I just changed the ‘theme’ and this resolved the issue!?

As mentioned I am still ‘dabbling’ a little before I will probably subscribe to WordPress. I am currently going through my imported blog and sorting out all the lack of spaces under the photo’s etc (removing  etc). My main concern is after making my imported blog look nice and ok, if i later change my theme it may well become messed up again? Am I right in thinking this?

  • The theme you use should not affect the order of your posts in any way. With the exception of sticky posts which will always appear at the top (and of which you currently have none), posts should appear in reverse-chronological order no matter the theme. Changing themes also should not do anything to the actual layout of any one post itself, except to the extent that a wider or narrower content area would change line lengths with all that implies.

Can you recall which theme it was that showed the posts out of order?

I notice you’ve changed themes several times the past few days. If you go to My Site ->Themes you can preview themes on your site from there without actually activating them, in case that helps.

Lastly, this link will show you how to set a post as a sticky post in the two different editors:

Thanks, the theme may have been ‘Plane’?

  • If I view your site using the Plane theme I don’t see any posts that are out of order, so it might have been a glitch that was cleared up when you switched themes and refreshed the page. However, if it happens again, please let me know so I can view your site with the problem active.

    Sorry to bother you again…

Question re: setting a ‘Featured Image’ on a Page…

So I have set an image at https://marksnape.wordpress.com/sri-lanka/

However this clearly is not showing from the link (Category) on the Home Page, ie https://marksnape.wordpress.com/category/sri-lanka/ ?

I am guessing this is something simple?

  • Those two pages you linked are not the same.

https://marksnape.wordpress.com/sri-lanka/ is what’s called a static page. On a static page you add information manually, and that information doesn’t change unless you edit the page yourself. Static pages can have featured images.

https://marksnape.wordpress.com/category/sri-lanka/ is a dynamic page. In reality it’s not actually a page at all, but a link to the RSS feed for that particular category. As they display feeds, dynamic pages update automatically as you add new posts to that particular feed (in this case, a category). But you can’t set a featured image for a dynamic page.

If you want your posts from that category to display on the static page with the custom header instead, you can add the Display Posts shortcode to that page and configure the code to only show posts from that category.

Complete instructions here: Display Posts Shortcode

    That’s great, thanks.

    I have used [display-posts category="sri lanka" posts_per_page="-1" include_date="true" order="ASC" orderby="post"]

Just wondering is there anyway they can display in full (the posts that is) ie the same as main Home/Blog page?

  • Add include_content=”true” to your shortcode, though the appearance might differ from how the home page shows posts. That’s an inherent limitation of the shortcode, I’m afraid.
