Fairly new, having issues with desk mess theme, etc

Hi, first time here and I’m pretty new at this stuff…so I’m easily confused. lol I’m using the desk mess theme at my site (http://www.officejamsession.com) and am having a couple issues…
1. I can’t seem to get any widgets other than the standard to work. As soon as I add something different (Events Calendar was one I tried, along with Random Quotes), it will remove all my other widgets on the sidebar and leave only that one…and there’s no way to add them back, or remove them otherwise (the links are all grey and unmovable). Any idea what the issue could be?
2. The theme has tabs along the top designed to look like paper tabs, which list the pages on my blog I’ve added. The issue is that I have pages on there that I can’t seem to get rid of (I tried the excludes command, but it just moved them to the first column). I would like to have just the pages I want there and be able to add others that would not show up. Also, the text is spaced so far apart that I can’t fit more than one word on the tab. Any idea how to change the line spacing so that it’ll all fit on the little tabs?
I realize this is really like three questions but I’ve done a lot of searching and can’t seem to find any answers. Help!! And thanks in advance.
