I am looking to update a very basic family website with a calendar for dates when in use. I already have a domain and a very old site that I just upload info to. I am not sure what I need to do and or how hard it will be to setup.

First things first, creating a simple blog with free plan of WordPress.com is quite simple. You don’t need to know much of web developing or IT stuffs. WordPress made a step-by-step on getting started here:

Just follow what suit your preferences, with instructions in the link below. Reminder: you would pay a small amount for transferring or mapping domain(s).

Since your site is very old, I think there would be no way around this, unless someone could crawl your website for you in case your website is too large for manually re-posting process, otherwise you don’t have to mind about that.
