Fastest loading themes?

I’m working with a web page for a community organization that someone else originally came up with and I’m enhancing by adding content.
The site is intentionally very plain, and has no images yet when I run speed tests on various benchmarking sites, we still get mediocre results. I’m trying to improve our search ranking by improving speed, and it appears that the theme we are using could be the culprit.
Anyways, which of the built-in themes (particularly the free ones) is fastest loading, especially on mobile with minimal calls to javascript, style sheets, etc. We have a paid wordpress.com account of some sort but I don’t know which level. What we are currently using is the Shoreditch theme.
