favicon appearance in IE7 or IE8

so the topic of how to upload a favicon is pretty well covered in all several posts (just search on “favicon” or click a favion tag). I thried this, with initially no success at seeing the icon show up in my favorites, still would see the same “blue WordPress W”. I had a friend look, who did not have our site in his favorites, and it showed up clearly. So I went back to IE as it appears to be where there the problem is. What ulitmately worked was to copy the url from the top navigation bar, delete the site from my favorites, and then exit IE, restart IE, past the url back in the navigation bar at the top, and add the site back into favorite, this basically forced the new icon to load in. Seems stupid to me, but try that if you are having your favicon not “updating” in your favorites tab.

Now onto my question, the 16×16 pixel favicon should be hand “tuned” for the best appearance (it’s kind of an art), if I use the upload, I am afraid that the multi-down scaling of a larger image, while give less than optimum results, is there a way around this, or should one upload the image already downscaled and optimized as a 16×16 pixel image?

If you are referring to a wordpress.COM blog and not a self hosted wordpress.ORG intsall then take note of the following:

The Blog Picture (or Blavatar as we like to call it) allows you to upload a picture to be used as your blog image across WordPress.com. This image will be used as the favicon you see to the left of the URL in the address bar and for any pingbacks or trackbacks sent out from your blog. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/general-settings/

These are the best practices for uploading your gravatar:

    (1) Prepare the image prior to uploading it and make sure it’s no larger than 128 pixels X 128 pixels square.

    (2) The image filetype has to be either PNG, GIF or JPG. Make sure the file name contains only letters and numbers – no special characters – and make sure all letters are in lowercase.

    (3) Also make sure the image file name has an extension (Example – image.jpg)

    (4) Make your way to the gravatar site http://en.gravatar.com/ *Note the common questions and answers to them there http://en.gravatar.com/site/faq/
