Feature Image Display Problem on iPad device
-
I have used a feature image on several of my posts which looks fine on a PC and laptop, but a follower reported that it does not display correctly on her iPad. When viewing on an iPad the feature image (or header image) does not resize so the user has to scroll down for a very long time and the image is distorted. I checked this on my husband’s iPad and the same thing occurred.
Apart from removing the feature image / header is there anything that I can do? The theme is Independent Publisher and it is a responsive theme.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Independent publisher is a responsive layout theme so make sure you disable the mobile view. if you have the mobile view enabled that will queer mobile display for sure.
The mobile ready theme is a default theme and a completely different theme that you do not need to enable, if your theme is listed as a responsive layout theme here https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/responsive-layout/
The mobile default theme is provided for those who run older themes that aren’t the gold standard which is responsive layout.
A responsive layout theme adapts to different screen sizes so that your website will work (and be optimized for) iPhones, iPads, Android and other mobile devices. When responsive width themes are viewed on mobiles sidebars appear below the posts in order to provide as much space as possible for reading.
When we use a responsive theme we disable the mobile theme. Go to > Dashboard >Appearance > Mobile and disable the mobile theme
You can read more in the support docs at https://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/mobile-themes/
You can test your site at this link https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/
The missing widgets issue can also be caused by incorrect widget visibility settings https://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/#widget-visibility

Thanks Time Thief, but the mobile option IS disabled
Your theme, Independent Publisher, is already deemed to be mobile-friendly.
Do you mean I have to ENABLE it to work on older iPad devices?
-
Oh, and I tested it on the site you gave me (thank you) and it works fine both with and without a featured image. Could it just be a problem for users with older iPads?
-
The theme is not a mobile friendly theme.
It is a responsive layout theme.Independent Publisher is responsive, adjusting its layout to accommodate various devices and screen sizes.
https://wordpress.com/themes/independent-publisher/And, no we do not enable the mobile theme on any responsive layout theme. If you are sure you disabled the mobile display then you can type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for Staff help. Sorry, I am confused by your answer as when I look at Appearance/mobile I get the line “Awesome! Your theme, Independent Publisher, is already deemed to be mobile-friendly.”
the default setting was Enable Mobile theme ‘No‘
I have now set it to ‘Yes‘ and I will check tomorrow if this has fixed the problem for the iPad user.

I have now set it to ‘Yes’ and I will check tomorrow if this has fixed the problem for the iPad user.
Please do as I said and disable the mobile theme on your responsive layout theme. Staff will be doing a follow-up.

OK. Set the disable mobile theme to NO as requested.
One other point – it does look fine on an iPod (the feature image does not display) but either way it does not look fine on the iPad. -
Correction: when I set the disable mobile theme back to No, the header does appear and it becomes distorted on the iPod. Hope staff can have a look and figure out what to do.
Thanks -
Sorry thesacredpath I didn’t receive this response in may email, so have only just read it. I have removed a lot of the featured headers from my site for now as they still looked bad on the iPad. I will let you know the IOS tomorrow. Thank you for getting back to me.

@thesacredpath
OK. Got the information you wanted. The iOS is 6.1.3The header file looks OK it is sized at 1440×600
The feature image on An English Winter Garden – 1024×540
https://smallbluegreenflowers.wordpress.com/2016/01/24/garden-photography-an-english-winter-garden/
and
Inside the Glasshouse – 1432×694

do not resize correctly on the iPad. You have to scroll for quite a long time to reach the end of the feature image.
Thanks. -
Hmmm, iOS 6.1.3 is quite old (at least when it comes to the internet). I’m not seeing any resizing issues on my iPad with iOS 9.2.1. Is there anyway you can upgrade? On my Xcode simulator, the farthest back I can go is iOS 7.something on iPad 2.
-
OK. Thank you for all your help. I will assume that the latest software can cope with my images. I think the only reason my husband hasn’t upgraded is because he is worried about the effect on his iTunes library :) The lady who reported the problems to me also runs an older version, so as long as I know why this problem occurs I am happy to close the topic. I appreciate your help. Thank you.
-
You are welcome, and I’m seeing no issues on the newer iOS and Safari in either my phone or on my iPad so I’m certain all is well.
