Feature image settings – width and height, resolution etc.

  Hello,
  I would like to know what are the optimal settings for feature images. I uploaded a feature image, but it gets cropped. How can I avoid that? What is the optimal width and height? What is the optimal resolution in dpi? Should it not exceed 200 kb?
