Feature request
-
Hi.
Sense I would like to request that an editing tool bar be added to the block editor, so I can create hyper links. With my device, if I select text, editing options don’t appear like they should.
-
Hi,
Have you tried either of the two methods described and illustrated in the Add Links to Posts, Pages, and Widgets section of the Links support page?
-
-
Thanks for the clarification. Neither the section I linked to above, nor the support page that it falls within, have anything to do with social embeds. The Links support page concerns the creation and customization of text and image links in posts, pages, widgets, and other similar content areas.
Within the Add Links to Posts, Pages, and Widgets section of the Links support page is an animated image that shows that there already exists a toolbar that includes a link icon that is used in the creation of links as demonstrated there.
With my device, if I select text, editing options don’t appear like they should.
If you have tried the methods described and demonstrated in that section and are unable to create links satisfactorily, then please let us know and we’ll try to figure out why it’s not working for you.
If those two methods fail for you, perhaps you can provide screenshots showing what happens when you try to implement them. If necessary, see the Making a Screenshot support page, and its Sharing your Screenshot section.
If text and image links aren’t the type of “hyper links” you are referring to, then please explain exactly what type of links you’re trying to produce.

This question isn’t about social embeds, and sorry if I may have made a typo.
Also, this is about pages, and not about posts.
For example, in a page, I would like a link that says chat with a coordinator now.
-
Text links in pages are made exactly the same way that text links in posts are made. I’ve provided a link to a support page section that describes, and demonstrates in GIFs, two methods of creating such links. Please try those methods.
You can also make links with HTML link code. For example:
chat with a coordinator now — That phrase is linked to your forums profile, and the HTML code for the link is
<a href="https://wordpress.com/forums/users/storygenie5/">chat with a coordinator now</a>The HTML code of a basic text link is < a href=link URL” >, minus the space after left angle bracket and the space after the right angle bracket.

Hi.
I just checked the support page, and it stated that there should be a device feature that lets you create a hyper link when text is selected. I am using an android tablet, and my device doesn’t come with this feature. When I select text, the only options are to copy, paste, cut, or delete selection. No editing options pop up.

Hello there,
I think you might be referring to this: https://wordpress.com/support/links/#add-links-to-posts-pages-and-widgets
Just to check, can you see this when editing:

-
You are using the WordPress app (not WordPress.com in a browser) on your device?
The mobile app tends to have a more limited set of blocks than you find in the browser, so if you fire up Chrome or Safari on your device and log in to WordPress.com, do you see the option to edit links?

Can you point to a page on your site where you are having this issue. The option to turn text into a hyperlink should be visible. Can you let us know the page where the issue is and the word (or words) you are trying to turn into a link and we can take a closer look?
Thanks!

Hi.
I would not like to specify a page, as the page that I will have to do that with is not ready yet. I tried adding the link html code into my website with the custom html block, but when I previewed the page, it appeared as plain text, and not as a link. When I tried to click on it, nothing happened.
However, the link html code works just fine in the forums.

There is not a private support option for free WordPress.com sites but is this a draft on your site? Perhaps you can set it up and let us know so we can take a look?
Otherwise I’m not really sure how we can help. It’s sounding like there may be an issue with the HTML you are using but we’d have no way to confirm that without taking a look at the issue directly, thanks!

Hi there,
there is no add link option, because my device doesn’t have that feature.
Can you tell us what device and browser you’re using? I checked your Help & Information page in the browser on my computer, and the toolbar appears just as it should when I click inside any paragraph on that page:
If you’re using the browser on a mobile device, like a smartphone, you should see the toolbar stuck to the top of the screen instead, not floating above the specific paragraph you’re working on like on desktop:
But this will only appear if you click/tap inside a specific paragraph – that toolbar only appears when a specific block is selected, and won’t appear if your cursor is not active inside a block.
But also keep in mind you don’t need that button to add a link to text. Copy the URL you want to link to, then just highlight the text and paste. The editor should automatically turn the selected text into a hyperlink when you do that.
I tried adding the link html code into my website with the custom html block
Are you speaking of this?
That
<a></a>tag is missing thehref=""attribute that specifies the URL you’re linking to. It should look something like this:<a href="https://google.com">Text you want visible on the screen</a> -
Oh, I see you mentioned using an Android tablet earlier up in the thread. In that case you should see the toolbar stuck to the top of the screen, as in my second screen shot posted above.

We don’t need either of those things. We just need to know what version of Android you’re using. Typically that can be found in the Settings -> System.
Without that information, there’s little for us to go on to be able to help you with this.
