Feature request: allow ongoing replies in comment threads

  When readers comment, another commenter can reply, but only to an extent. Once the comment replies have reached their indentation limit, no more replies are possible, *in the web interface*. Blog owners have the option to increase the indenting limit up to 10, but doing so past about 3 or 4 levels causes formatting issues, particularly on mobile devices.

  The thing is, replies to comments at the maximum level of indenting are possible. Someone can respond to comments at this level, and the replies post directly underneath, with no further indenting. This is ideal!

  However, this is only possible if the reader received a comment notification email, or has a WordPress account with access to the separate WordPress comment toolbar interface. A web user working just through the web has no ability to respond to comments at the maximum level of indentation. This means they often have to respond to comments out of order. In practice, even most WordPress users also end up doing this because they don’t understand the essentially hidden tools they have.

  So, my feature request is to simply allow access to the reply-at-maximum-indent functionality to all users, or at least to give blog owners the option of turning on.

  Of, if this isn’t doable, then give us the option to hook in other commenting systems that do allow this functionality. As a WordPress Premium customer, I’m getting annoyed with having to explain the limitations of WordPress commenting to my readers.

  I’ve recreated the situation you describe and I can definitely see why offering the reply button makes sense, even at the maximum nesting level.
