Feature Request : Create from template or boilerplate install

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m a designer building multiple client sites and want to streamline my workflow. Instead of reinstalling the same plugins, themes, and settings every time, I’d like to create a reusable base install or “starter site” I can clone or deploy for each new project. What’s the best way to do this on WordPress.com? Are there tools or workflows you recommend for creating and duplicating a starter setup?

    Hi @daronrconsulting,

    That’s a great question,

Here are a few ways you can approach this on WordPress.com (particularly if you’re on a plugin-enabled plan like Business or Commerce):

    1. Duplicate an Existing Site

You can create a “base” site with all your preferred plugins, themes, and settings, then duplicate it using the Clone Site feature available in the Hosting Configuration panel. This creates a full copy of your site, perfect for spinning up new projects quickly.

    2. Use the All-in-One WP Migration Plugin

Another option is to use the All-in-One WP Migration plugin to export your starter setup and then import it to new sites as needed. This gives you more flexibility and works well for theme/plugin-heavy setups.
Check this guide for reference: https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-using-all-in-one-migration/

    3. Use a Staging Site as a Template

If you’re already using a staging site, you could configure it with your starter tools and then manually apply those configurations to new sites. While a bit more manual, it’s helpful for testing and versioning your base setup. More info on staging sites setups here: Create a staging site

Let me know if that helps.
