Feature Request: Pinning Top Toolbar

  • Unknown's avatar

Howdy! I’m coming back to this from my previous topic https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/block-editor-pinning-top-toolbar-in-firefox/ where I am still having an issue of needing to pin the toolbar each and every time I open the WordPress Editor. It’s a huge irritant.

I’d like to add a feature request to globally pin the Editor toolbar on all my sites at one go as the default behavior.

If it is not possible to do this globally, please add pinning the toolbar to the Block Editor’s Options panel so I’d only need to set this once per site.

    Thanks!

  • That is a good idea, thanks!

Yay! Hope it happens sooner, ‘cuz the dent in my desk from my forehead is getting deeper each day. :)

Hi folks. I not very familiar with the block editor. How is pinning of the toolbar ordinarily accomplished, even for one session?

Hey @musicdoc1 head to the three dots in the top right corner of the editing screen in the block editor and click it. When it opens you’ll see the first option is “Top toolbar”.

After you enable it, the block’s formatting toolbar, of whatever block you’re using, will remain at the top of the screen rather than appearing at the top of the block itself. The top toolbar is stationary, so is visible all the time. Hope that helps.

Hi folks, just posting back to ask if there’s any news on this. Sure would be great.

  • Hey @justjennifer I’m curious about this issue… does the “Top toolbar” setting get reset even if you just reload the editor page? Or is it the issue that it persists for a while, but at some point the setting becomes un-set?

I’ve tried this in Firefox on my end, and for me the Top Toolbar setting is persistent and I have not had it reset itself like you are describing.

I’ve read up on your other post as well, and it has me wondering something else if you would not mind checking. The Gutenberg block editor loads a bit differently in the WordPress.com dashboard vs. wp-admin, so with this in mind, does the Top Toolbar setting “stick” if you edit in Gutenberg via wp-admin vs Gutenberg in WordPress.com admin?

    Thanks for the additional info!

Hi again, I briefly checked this morning and there didn’t appear to be a difference if I pin it at WP Admin or MySite. I’ll keep checking throughout the day and report back.

I believe part of the reason for my issue is that I routinely log out and dump my cache and cookies at the end of the day. So whatever cookie is set in my browser for that preference likely gets dumped as well. That was the reason I was hoping for a setting like the pre-publish checks.

does the “Top toolbar” setting get reset even if you just reload the editor page?

If by “reload” you mean refresh or hard refresh while the Editor is open in my browser:
    WP Admin: still pinned
    MySite: still pinned
I also exited the new post with the top toolbar pinned and it persisted the next time I opened a new or existing post. This is while logged in during the same session.

Or is it the issue that it persists for a while, but at some point the setting becomes un-set?

AFAIK- I haven’t run into this scenario while logged in during the same session.

And can we please agree on a naming convention (Gutenberg, Block Editor, Editor) for clarity? :D

I’ve just now logged out and cleared my browser cache and cookies and the result is that the top toolbar is no longer pinned. Now at FF 82.0 (64-bit)

    Thanks.

Just posting back to mention that MS Edge Version 86.0.622.51 (Official build) (64-bit) behaves the same as FF. All’s good until logging out, clearing cache and cookies, etc.

Also just posting back that it looks like with a recent update “Spotlight mode” has made it into the Editor’s Options>Preferences>Appearance.
